Senior Researcher - Machine Learning and System Security

About the role

Our client, a leading global technology company, is looking for a Senior Researcher specialising in machine learning for platform and system security.

The role sits at the intersection of machine learning, operating systems, computer architecture, embedded systems and cybersecurity. You will research and develop ML-based techniques for identifying, analysing and mitigating security threats across complex computing platforms. A strong foundation in modern machine learning is the primary requirement, combined with enough systems and security knowledge to work on low-level, platform-focused problems.

What you will be doing:

• Researching and developing ML techniques for platform, system and device security
• Applying neural networks, transformer-based models and probabilistic methods to practical security problems
• Developing models for anomaly detection, threat identification, behavioural analysis and security monitoring
• Investigating the use of ML for detecting vulnerabilities, attacks, malware and abnormal system behaviour
• Designing and evaluating ML-based security solutions across operating systems, embedded platforms and low-level software
• Running experiments on real-world security datasets and system telemetry, and analysing robustness and false-positive behaviour
• Building research prototypes and translating successful approaches into practical implementations
• Contributing to publications, technical reports and internal demonstrations

Your background:

• PhD or equivalent research-level expertise in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline (candidates completing a relevant PhD are also encouraged to apply)
• Strong background in probabilistic machine learning, statistics or applied mathematics
• Deep understanding of modern ML methods, including neural networks and transformer architectures
• Hands-on experience applying ML to real-world problems
• Strong programming and experimental development skills
• Familiarity with computer architecture, operating systems and systems-level concepts
• Strong written and spoken English

Desirable skills:

• Experience developing low-level or operating-system-level software
• Knowledge of hypervisors, virtualisation, kernels, firmware or embedded systems
• Strong programming skills in C, C++ or Rust
• Understanding of CPU, memory, device or hardware security architectures
• Experience with malware detection, intrusion detection or endpoint security
• Experience applying ML to security telemetry, system logs, binaries or low-level execution behaviour
• Participation in capture-the-flag competitions or vulnerability analysis
