What they need

Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Electronic Systems Engineer to support the delivery of complex, security sensitive engineering programmes.

This role requires a high level of autonomy. Candidates are expected to join with the pre-requisite skills, experience and professional judgement to rapidly contribute and deliver meaningful technical outputs with minimal supervision. In parallel, the role involves supporting and guiding less experienced members of the engineering team, setting good technical and professional standards.

The position is hands-on and design-led, combining electronic systems engineering, software and signal processing within defence and government linked programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development and verification of advanced electronic systems, from concept through to delivery.
  • Undertake hands on electronic design engineering, including system level trade-offs and detailed design.
  • Develop and maintain software components and engineering tools, with Python as a core programming language.
  • Apply strong signal processing expertise, including analysis, algorithm development and performance evaluation.
  • Support system architecture activities, requirements capture, design justification and technical documentation.
  • Contribute to verification, validation and test activities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring, supporting the development of less experienced engineers.
  • Operate effectively on defence, security or government linked programmes, following secure development practices.
  • Interface with customers, partners and internal stakeholders.
  • Support technical reviews, demonstrations and (where appropriate) proposal or bid activities.
  • Work within export control, information assurance and security constraints.

Requirements

  • Right to work in the UK and ability to obtain security clearance
  • Master’s degree (or higher) in Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline (alternative equivalent experience may be considered but must be clearly evidenced).
  • Minimum 5 years’ professional experience, predominantly in design-focused engineering roles.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering complex, mission critical systems for satellite or other communications systems.
  • Excellent C and Python programming skills, and embedded software development.
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of RF and signal processing.
  • PCB design, fabrication and testing experience.
  • Experience working in regulated, safety critical or high assurance environments.
  • Exposure to full engineering lifecycle activities (requirements, design, test, and in service support).
  • Ideally, experience working on significant military or defence programmes and in security restricted or classified environments.
  • Ideally, familiarity with defence, aerospace or secure systems development standards.

Company Profile:

Exotopic is a UK‑based consultancy and engineering company operating at the intersection of advanced technology, national capability and real‑world delivery. We work across the space, quantum, defence, security and adjacent deep‑tech sectors, supporting organisations to take complex technologies from concept through to operational use.

Our work spans business acceleration, engineering, systems design, regulation, commercialisation and programme delivery, with a particular focus on high‑assurance and mission‑critical environments. Exotopic frequently operates at early‑ and mid‑stage programme maturity, helping customers solve technically challenging problems where requirements are evolving and constraints are real.

We are a small, fast‑growing company with a strongly hands‑on, problem‑led culture. Team members are trusted to take ownership, exercise sound engineering judgement and deliver tangible outcomes, while working collaboratively and with discipline in secure and regulated contexts.
