What they need

Position Summary: Perform quantitative and analytical assessments of market risk across multiple commodities, including gas, power, crude oil, and refined products. Support the analysis and validation of risk exposures, MTM valuations, and VaR metrics to ensure accurate risk reporting and provide insights into portfolio risks and market drivers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform quantitative analysis and validation of mark-to-market (MTM) valuations across financial and physical commodity instruments to assess market risk exposures and ensure the accuracy of risk metrics.
  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of risk analytics, including Value at Risk (VaR) methodologies, back-testing, and stress testing, to evaluate market risk exposures and validate risk measurement models.
  • Analyze daily price movements, trading positions, and risk exposures to identify key market drivers, assess portfolio performance, and provide insight into potential risks.
  • Conduct daily analysis of risk positions and corresponding profit and loss (P&L) drivers to support the validation and substantiation of VaR results.
  • Evaluate embedded market risks in new transactions and assess their potential impact on the company's overall risk profile.
  • Review market assumptions and valuation inputs for significant new transactions, working with senior risk personnel and the trading desk to identify potential risk considerations.
  • Analyze changes in option Greeks and portfolio composition to assess options-related exposures and their impact on overall market risk.
  • Perform daily reconciliations of trading positions, valuations, and risk data across front, middle, and back-office functions to support effective controls throughout the trading lifecycle.
  • Investigate, communicate, and help resolve reconciliation breaks and discrepancies in coordination with relevant business and control teams.
  • Conduct month-end forward curve validation to support the accuracy of MTM valuations and fair value determinations, including contributing to the development and maintenance of appropriate valuation reserves.
  • Collaborate with market risk, trading, finance, and other business functions to support the accuracy and integrity of daily P&L, risk, and VaR reporting.
  • Respond to ad hoc analytical requests from the trading desk and management, providing timely, accurate, and well-supported analysis to facilitate informed business decisions.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with VBA and/or Python for quantitative analysis, data processing, and reporting automation.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including the ability to evaluate linear and nonlinear risk exposures and interpret complex data sets.
  • Solid understanding of market risk concepts, including VaR, stress testing, back-testing, valuation methodologies, and risk measurement techniques.
  • Previous experience in market risk analysis, preferably within commodities, energy trading, financial markets, or a related environment.
  • Knowledge of energy markets and physical commodity trading is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify data inconsistencies, investigate discrepancies, and draw meaningful conclusions from quantitative analysis.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain analytical findings and risk exposures to traders, risk professionals, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to competing requests, and deliver accurate work within tight deadlines.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced trading environment with frequent interaction with the trading desk.
