Position Summary
AdvR designs and manufactures advanced electro-optic and non-linear photonics components for high-performance commercial and government applications. Our work spans research and development through production, requiring close collaboration across disciplines. As part of the Hawthorn Photonics Group, which also includes Covesion (Southampton, UK) and Radiantis (Barcelona, Spain), AdvR benefits from shared expertise and a broad technology portfolio across the photonics industry.
The Senior Scientist works within AdvR’s Technology (R&D) group to expand AdvR’s technical capabilities by leading innovation around waveguide fabrication, evaluation, and/or packaging. As a part of the Technology group, the Senior Scientist will contribute to the AdvR technology roadmap by conceptualizing, developing, and leading R&D programs involving nonlinear optics and electro-optic modulation. This position is expected to serve as a local expert, providing technical guidance to the Delivery (Production) group, and solving complex problems independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and develop novel ideas and use-cases for nonlinear components, including pursuing funding when appropriate
- Advance AdvR’s technical capabilities consistent with technology and product roadmaps
- Serve as a Principal Investigator on internal and externally funded programs
- Independently execute complex technical tasks with minimal oversight
- Regularly communicate technical progress, challenges, and upcoming work with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and members of the Technology team
- Develop and execute advanced experimental techniques to characterize waveguide-based devices
- Author and contribute to internal and external reports containing trustworthy data and defensible conclusions
- Independently generate high-quality data to inform technical decisions
- Provide technical guidance and feedback to the Technology and Delivery teams
- Act as a technical mentor to colleagues in both the Technology and Delivery teams
- Support the sales team through technical customer interactions, when appropriate
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs evolve, consistent with the scope of the role
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Physics, Engineering or related field
- 5+ Years demonstrated experience in an optics or photonics R&D setting
- Strong experimental and/or theoretical background with optical waveguides and nonlinear optics
- Demonstrated expertise related to waveguide fabrication, nonlinear optics, electro-optic modulation, periodic poling, and/or RF photonics
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate with experts and nonexperts
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Due to the nature of the work and applicable regulations, this position requires U.S. citizenship
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience writing proposals and running federally funded programs
- Proficiency in modeling optical systems
- Demonstrated experience with instrumentation control via Python or similar
- Applications-based knowledge of nonlinear optics in quantum systems
- Knowledge of quantum optics, quantum light characterization techniques, and photon entanglement generation
- Experience designing, characterizing, and/or fabricating RF coplanar waveguides
- Proficiency in the design and characterization of electro-optic waveguide-based devices
Benefits AdvR offers flexible schedules and competitive benefits including medical, dental, vision insurance, and retirement accounts.
