Job Description:
The Server Engineer on shift is the accountable technical owner of the platform. The role therefore demands the same domain knowledge and technical depth across compute, virtualisation, software-defined storage and the management planes that bind them, so that incidents can be diagnosed and resolved on shift rather than held until the next business day. This is not a monitoring or ticket-routing position: the engineer is expected to take the platform apart and put it back together under pressure, unaided.

Qualifications and requirements:

• Diploma/ Degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent experience

• 5+ years of experience in server and compute infrastructure engineering and operations within mission-critical environments (data centre, colocation, cloud or service provider)

• Deep hands-on expertise with HCI and virtualisation platforms (e.g. Proxmox VE with Ceph, VMware vSphere/vSAN, Nutanix, Hyper-V), including cluster design, high availability and live migration, with a vendor-agnostic mindset and familiarity with supporting services such as Proxmox Backup Server and Proxmox Mail Gateway

• Experienced in administering Linux at the hypervisor and storage layers at scale, with a strong understanding of Ceph (RBD, CephFS, replication and erasure coding) and data protection (backup, replication, disaster recovery)

• Strong understanding of enterprise server hardware, including firmware lifecycle, out-of-band management (iDRAC, iLO, BMC) and facilities considerations such as power, cooling and rack density, with the ability to direct on-site personnel through physical tasks remotely

• Demonstrable understanding of SRE practice — SLIs, SLOs and error budgets, toil reduction, automation-first thinking, runbook-driven operations and blameless post-incident review — and the ability to apply it to an on-premises server estate

• Hands-on experience with automation and infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Ansible, Terraform, Python), and with monitoring, observability and capacity-management tooling (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix)

• Proven capability to resolve major incidents independently and under pressure, with sound judgement on when to act within delegated authority and when to escalate

• Willingness and ability to work an assigned rotating shift pattern providing 24/7 coverage, including nights, weekends and public holidays, and to support planned maintenance windows

• Proven ability to work remotely and independently: self-directed, disciplined in follow-through, excellent written English, and a reliable home working environment with resilient connectivity and power

• High-performance mindset — takes ownership of outcomes, pursues root cause rather than repeated workarounds, and consistently leaves the system better documented and more automated than it was found

Preferred (advantageous):

• Professional certifications, such as VMware VCP/VCAP, Nutanix NCP/NCM, Microsoft (Windows Server / Azure Local), Red Hat (RHCE) or Ceph certifications

• Prior experience in a 24/7 shift-based or follow-the-sun operations model for a mission-critical platform

• Experience with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure code

• Experience acting as a deputy or delegate for a platform owner, including change approval within delegated authority

• ITIL Foundation or equivalent grounding in incident, problem and change management
