Role Overview

The Senior SMP / Mechanical 3D Modeller will be responsible for delivering high-quality 3D models and layout designs for mining, minerals processing, materials handling, and oil & gas facilities. This role requires extensive hands-on experience in brownfields and greenfields projects, strong constructability knowledge, and the ability to support projects from concept, study, and detailed design through construction and commissioning.

The candidate will act as a technical authority and mentor, ensuring models are accurate, maintainable, safe, and compliant with project and client standards.

Key Responsibilities

3D Modelling & Layout

• Develop and maintain 3D models for mechanical, structural, piping, and equipment layouts using either SmartPlant 3D (SP3D), Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD, Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor or equivalent tools.
• Produce plant layouts, equipment arrangements, materials handling systems, conveyors, chutes, screens, crushers, tanks, and stockyard facilities.
• Deliver constructible and maintainable designs aligned with site conditions and operational requirements.
• Perform clash detection, spatial coordination, and layout optimization across disciplines.

Brownfields & Greenfields Projects

• Lead and support brownfields optimisation and safety modification projects (chute redesigns, conveyor upgrades, guarding, access platforms, debottlenecking).
• Contribute to greenfields and prefeasibility studies, including concept layouts, design development, and budget estimates.
• Support site investigations, laser scans, as-building, and design rectification.

Design Coordination & Leadership

• Coordinate with mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, civil, and process teams.
• Provide technical guidance to junior and intermediate modellers and designers.
• Review and check models and drawings for quality, compliance, and accuracy.
• Interface with engineers, project managers, fabricators, and construction teams.

Documentation & Deliverables

• Prepare and review GA drawings, layout drawings, fabrication drawings, and construction deliverables.
• Ensure compliance with client standards, industry codes, and safety requirements.
• Support tender packages, construction queries, and commissioning activities.

Site & Stakeholder Support

• Participate in site visits, inspections, and commissioning support as required.
• Liaise with clients and operations teams to ensure designs meet operational and maintenance needs.

Required Skills & Experience

• 5- 10 years’ experience as a Mechanical / SMP 3D Modeller in Mining, Engineering
• Experience delivering mining, port, and mineral processing projects across WA, covering iron ore, gold, nickel, zinc, alumina, diamonds, lithium, magnesium and copper.
• Strong background in Brownfields optimisation and safety modifications — chute redesigns, conveyor upgrades, screen change-outs, tank replacements, and maintenance access improvements.
• Proven capability in Greenfields layout and prefeasibility design, producing constructible, maintainable, and cost-effective plant layouts from concept to construction.
• Leadership roles with Emtek, Aspect, CADDS, Amec Foster Wheeler, Jacobs, Mintrex, TWP, RSV, delivering projects for Rio Tinto, FMG, BHP, Roy Hill, Northern Star, Southern Ports, CBH, and Newcrest.
• Extensive experience with:
• Materials handling systems (conveyors, chutes, screens, crushers)
• Stockyards, ship loaders, reclaimers, tanks, and process plant layouts
• Brownfields modifications and optimisation projects
• Strong understanding of fabrication, construction, maintenance, and safety in plant environments.
• Ability to work independently and lead design packages with minimal supervision.
• Excellent coordination, communication, and mentoring skills.

Qualifications & Certifications (Preferred)

• Diploma / Advanced Diploma / Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Drafting & Design.
• Formal training in SP3D / Bentley / AutoCAD.
• Site certifications (EWP, Forklift, Safety Inductions) – advantageous.
• Experience working to Australian and international standards is a plus.

Pay: $110,622.04 – $130,000.00 per year

• Site certifications (EWP, Forklift, Safety Inductions) : 1 year (Preferred)
