What they need
A MedTech company, Central New Jersey. On-site. Reports to the Senior Software Engineering Leader (CTO until that hire lands).
The problem
A surgeon in the operating room needs to know, in real time and to within a millimetre, where the patient is and where the plan says the next step should go. Our client does that with vision-based navigation and computer vision rather than tracking hardware fixed to the patient. The pipeline that makes it work has to capture, register, track and render inside a surgical workflow, on hardware in the room, without dropping a frame or asking the surgeon to wait.
You will build and harden that pipeline.
The role
You join a small software team that owns the navigation platform end to end: sensor capture and calibration, the registration and tracking pipeline, the planning and intra-operative user interface, and the integration with a complex electromechanical surgical system. The work is hands-on and close to the metal. You will stand next to the system you are writing software for, and you will test it on the bench and in cadaver labs, not only in simulation.
What you will do
- Design, build and own production components of the real-time navigation pipeline in modern C++, with Python for tooling, prototyping and test
- Take research code from the AI and R&D teams and turn it into robust, tested, maintainable product code
- Build the instrumentation, benchmarking and test harnesses that prove accuracy and latency, and keep proving them as the system changes
- Work with the integration and hardware teams on the software side of sensor, compute and device integration
- Write software that will be submitted to regulators: clear requirements, traceable design, unit and integration tests, documented decisions
- Review code, give direct feedback and take it
What they are looking for
- Four or more years building production software in C++ for real-time, embedded, graphics or vision systems
- Solid Python
- Working knowledge of at least one of: 3D geometry and linear algebra, sensor models and calibration, point-cloud processing, GPU or CUDA programming, real-time rendering
- Comfort with Linux, build systems, CI and profiling tools
- Evidence you can ship: a product in users' hands, a system that runs unattended, or an open-source project people depend on
- Care about correctness. A navigation error is not a bug ticket, it is a patient
Nice to have
Qt or similar desktop UI frameworks, ROS or ROS 2, OpenCV, PCL, Open3D or equivalent, experience in a regulated software lifecycle (IEC 62304 or similar), prior work on surgical, medical imaging or image-guided systems.
Who should not apply
- If you want a large team, a slow release cadence or a job that is purely software with no hardware in the room, look elsewhere. The upside is that the thing you build will be in operating rooms with your decisions in it.
Other offers great for you!
