Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take hands-on ownership of significant areas of our core PHP/Laravel platform. Working closely with our Technical Lead and a small Product Engineering team, you’ll turn business and client needs into sound technical designs, production-ready features and reliable releases.

This role combines senior individual contribution with day-to-day technical leadership. You’ll help shape and sequence work, keep concurrent milestones moving, review and improve what ships, mentor other developers and protect the performance, security and reliability of the platform. With short decision paths and direct access to stakeholders, you’ll have visible influence over both the product and the way the team delivers. This is an initial six-month full-time contract, with potential to extend as the roadmap grows.

What You'll Do

• Deliver end-to-end: Design, build, test, and release features across our PHP/Laravel application, from technical design through to production.
• Own meaningful outcomes: Take accountability for substantial areas of the platform and for delivering agreed milestones, not only individual tickets.
• Support team delivery: Partner with the Technical Lead to break down work in Jira, sequence priorities within sprints, identify dependencies and keep concurrent initiatives moving.
• Lift engineering quality: Lead thoughtful code reviews, reinforce practical standards and progressively modernise legacy PHP using maintainable Laravel patterns.
• Protect the production environment: Improve platform performance, security, reliability and supportability for systems clients rely on every day.
• Develop others: Mentor less-experienced engineers through pairing, constructive review and clear technical guidance.
• Use AI responsibly: Apply modern AI coding tools to accelerate delivery while carefully validating generated code, assumptions and edge cases.
• Work directly with stakeholders: Clarify requirements with clients and internal teams, explain trade-offs in plain language and translate briefs into clear technical solutions.

What You Bring

• At least five years of professional PHP development experience, including strong hands-on Laravel capability or a demonstrated history of moving substantial PHP applications toward framework-based development.
• Strong foundations in MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery, together with experience designing and integrating third-party and custom APIs. PostgreSQL experience is advantageous.
• Experience leading or coordinating a small development team, or operating as its senior technical point of reference.
• A delivery mindset, with the ability to estimate, sequence and take accountability for milestones across competing priorities.
• Practical experience using AI coding tools in a professional environment, paired with the judgment to test and challenge their output.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical issues to both engineering and non-technical audiences.
• A collaborative, in-person working style and willingness to own a product beyond initial delivery.
• Experience in—or a genuine interest in—healthcare, pharmacy or patient-management data is highly regarded.
