The opportunity

Our client is a well-established UK bank serving personal, business and commercial customers. After a period of major transformation, it has a clear strategy and a significant engineering agenda: modernising core platforms, decoupling services and building first-class digital journeys.

They're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to take technical ownership within a cross-functional squad. You'll lead design, set engineering standards and mentor others – while staying hands-on with the code. It's a bank big enough for your work to matter to millions of customers, and small enough that your decisions are seen.

What you'll be doing

• Leading the technical design of features and services, working with Solution Architecture
• Building secure, resilient back-end services and APIs across payments, lending, onboarding and digital banking
• Breaking legacy capability into well-bounded, event-driven services and integrating with core banking and payment schemes
• Owning services in production: observability, incident response and root-cause fixes
• Setting the bar for code review, automated testing, CI/CD and infrastructure as code
• Mentoring engineers and influencing engineering practice beyond your own squad
• Working with product, QA, architecture and delivery partners to turn business needs into working software

What we're looking for

• 8+ years' commercial software engineering, with a clear track record at senior level
• Deep expertise in C# / .NET or Java, building distributed back-end services and APIs
• Strong system design skills: microservices, messaging (Kafka or similar), resilience patterns
• Hands-on cloud experience, ideally Azure, with containers and Kubernetes
• Mature engineering habits: automated testing, CI/CD, secure coding, infrastructure as code
• Experience leading technical design and mentoring other engineers
• Confident communicator with both engineers and business stakeholders

Great to have: UK financial services experience (payments, lending, core banking, Open Banking), legacy modernisation or cloud migration, and working with offshore delivery partners.
