Senior Software Engineer - Python / TypeScript

About the role

We are hiring Senior Software Engineers for a fully remote, three-month contract supporting advanced AI data and evaluation work. This opportunity is open to candidates based in the United States and Canada, with an immediate start. We are hiring for up to 200 positions.

We are looking for engineers with strong technical judgment and a clear eye for quality—people who can recognize what separates a good example from a great one, communicate their reasoning clearly, and work effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.

What you’ll do

Design, refine, and iterate on rubrics and evaluation criteria for preference data.

Review and label data with a high bar for quality, catching subtle issues others may miss.

Build and maintain pipelines and infrastructure that support data generation, collection, and evaluation workflows.

Turn findings into clear write-ups, updates, and recommendations.

Collaborate closely with researchers and engineers to translate qualitative judgment into scalable processes.

Required qualifications

5+ years of professional experience in Python—especially building or maintaining pipelines and infrastructure—or TypeScript, Go, or JavaScript.

Experience contributing to or navigating large codebases; experience with codebases such as VS Code is a plus.

Hands-on experience with preference-data collection and/or rubric creation.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill technical work into clear, actionable summaries.

Demonstrated judgment and the ability to explain why something is high quality.

Background from a leading technology company and/or top-tier university is strongly preferred.

Candidates must not currently be employed by Microsoft.

Engagement details

Contract type: Independent contractor; no medical benefits or paid leave.

Duration: Three months.

Start: Immediate.

Work Location: USA (Remote); candidates must be based in the United States or Canada.

Time commitment: At least 4 hours per day and at least 20 hours per week.

Schedule: At least 4 hours of overlap with Pacific Time.

Compensation: $100–$150 per hour, based on interview feedback and candidate experience.
