What they need

  • Form’s Advanced Product Development team is responsible for architecting and designing the next generation of our iron-air battery system — the cell, module, pack, and the support systems that keep them running reliably for decades in the field
  • We work ahead of our production programs, translating breakthrough electrochemistry and system requirements into mechanical designs that can scale to high-volume manufacturing
  • We’re hiring a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to develop the mechanical architecture and design of our next-generation battery and support systems
  • You will be responsible for developing systems which span thermal, fluid, and structural subsystems, and while resolving the toughest interdisciplinary trade-offs
  • This will include first principles modeling and analysis, first of a kind designs for experimentation and verification testing, and iteration into our next energy storage product
  • You’ll work closely with battery scientists, materials engineers, electrical and controls engineers, and manufacturing engineers to make sure design decisions made today hold up at gigawatt-hour scale tomorrow
  • Own the mechanical design and architecture of next-generation energy storage systems (cell, module, thermal, fluid handling, structural) end-to-end, from concept through system verification
  • Make and defend high-leverage trade-offs across subsystem interfaces — performance, cost, manufacturability, and reliability — where the right answer isn’t obvious
  • Build or direct first-principles analytical models that inform architecture decisions
  • Lead first-of-a-kind prototype builds and test campaigns to validate system-level design choices
  • Set technical direction for design-for-manufacturing and design-for-cost across the next-gen program, partnering with manufacturing engineering to plan the path from prototype to Form Factory-scale production
  • Represent mechanical engineering in cross-functional architecture reviews with electrochemistry, controls, program management, and compliance
  • Engage directly with critical vendors on early-stage development and sourcing strategy for novel components
  • Champion safety, especially when introducing new lab processes, prototype hardware, or test methods

Benefits

  • 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums covered for employees
  • Health insurance coverage begins first day of employment
  • Health Savings Account
  • Generous PTO policies to enable employees to recharge when needed
  • An Employee Resource Program that provides mental health counseling services, legal guidance, financial resources, and other helpful consulting services
  • 80% of the total medical, dental, and vision premiums covered for dependents
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave, 14 weeks for the birthing parent
  • Access to a Dependent Care Account
  • Access to a Health Flexible Spending Account
  • Access to a Commuter Benefits Account
  • Access to an Adoption Assistance Flexible Spending Account
  • Stock options granted to all employees
  • Stock equity education and tax advice service provided by Carta
  • Company sponsored 401k
  • Access to an annual budget for professional development
  • License to complete Gallup’s Strengths Finder Assessment and ongoing resources
  • 100% employer-sponsored coverage life insurance, and short and long-term disability policies- A record of technical leadership and mentorship — influencing engineering direction and raising team capability
  • Comfort operating with significant ambiguity in an early-stage environment ramping toward production, with the urgency to hit demanding schedule targets
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor’s with 12+ years, or advanced degree with equivalent experience, in mechanical design of complex electromechanical or fluid/thermal systems
  • Deep first-principles grounding in thermo-fluid systems, with experience translating analytical models directly into design decisions
  • Demonstrated track record owning system-level architecture — not just component design — including the trade-offs across thermal, fluid, and structural interfaces
  • Experience taking a product from early-stage concept through to manufacturing and driving development strategy along the way
  • Experience in energy storage, batteries, or another safety-critical, highly regulated hardware industry is a strong plus
  • Strong ownership mentality to do what it takes; eager to roll up sleeves and get hands-on with hardware when necessary
