What they need
Do you have experience delivering technology and business change within the UK music industry?
If yes, we'd love to hear from you.
This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of music rights administration.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Technology Business Analyst to join the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and help drive strategic transformation across technology, data, operations and member services.
The role offers the chance to analyse, define and improve how MCPS works across core systems, data, operations, and service models. The ideal candidate will translate business needs into clear, well-prioritised requirements and help deliver solutions that ensure MCPS operates efficiently, accurately and at scale.
About the MPA Group of Companies
The MPA works on behalf of its wide-ranging membership to protect and enhance the rights of the music publishers and creators at the heart of British music’s extraordinary cultural and economic success story. We strive to be the catalyst for positive change in the music publishing community, by empowering our members and by advocating on behalf of our industry with passion, integrity, respect for others and with the creator at the heart of everything we do.
The MPA also owns and operates its subsidiary businesses MCPS and PMLL (collectively known as The MPA Group).
About MCPS
The MCPS is the UK collection society that licenses mechanical (reproduction) copyrights on behalf of over 46,000 music publisher, songwriter, composer, and lyricist members.
As our business grows, we are implementing new opportunities, reviewing operations, and working closely with the MCPS Board to deliver a long‑term strategy focused on growth and efficiency. MCPS is entering a pivotal phase of transformation. This role sits at the heart of that change, leading and delivering a large-scale business transformation that will improve performance, efficiency, and organisational capability at MCPS. This role partners with senior leaders, project teams, and stakeholders to drive change across people, processes, and technology which will ultimately improve performance and deliver greater value to members.
About the Role
You will lead the business analysis function across MCPS transformation initiatives, covering process improvement, technology change, data, and operating model design.
Reporting to the IT Director, the role will work closely with senior stakeholders, delivery teams, collective management organisations, music publishers and external vendors to understand business needs, analyse current processes and systems, and define clear requirements and solutions that help MCPS build a more independent, modern and member-centric organisation.
This position requires a blend of analytical rigour and hands-on delivery, operating confidently across technical, operational, commercial and governance domains. You will play a key role in helping MCPS shape its future operating model, ensuring business processes, systems and data capabilities are aligned to support continued growth and exceptional service delivery for members.
Key responsibilities include:
Business Analysis Leadership
- Lead business analysis activities across transformation initiatives, from discovery and feasibility through to implementation and post-implementation review.
- Translate strategic priorities into clear roadmaps, business cases, delivery plans, and measurable outcomes.
- Provide senior leadership with accurate, actionable insights to support decision-making.
- Elicit, analyse, document, and validate business, functional and non-functional requirements using workshops, interviews, observation, and document analysis.
- Produce high-quality analysis artefacts, including business requirements documents, user stories with acceptance criteria, process maps, data flow diagrams, and use cases.
- Support the development of business cases, options appraisals, and cost-benefit analysis to inform investment decisions.
- Set and uphold business analysis standards, templates, and good practice across MCPS.
- Assist in managing a portfolio of transformation initiatives and project workstreams, including support with the day‑to‑day delivery of transformation activities and cross‑functional coordination.
Process and Systems Analysis
- Map current-state (as-is) and future-state (to-be) processes across licensing, usage processing, matching and royalty distribution, identifying gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Work with technology, data, and operations teams (including external vendors) to analyse systems and data flows and define requirements for modernisation.
- Define requirements for system enhancements, integrations, and data migrations, ensuring MCPS needs are fully captured, traceable and prioritised.
- Carry out data analysis to understand data quality issues, their root causes, and their operational impact.
- Identify and recommend continuous improvement opportunities across operational processes.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels, from operational teams to executive leadership team members, constructively challenging assumptions.
- Work with MCPS teams, publishers, service partners, and industry bodies to help optimise performance and service outcomes.
- Act as a trusted transformation advisor to the IT Director, articulating options, trade‑offs, risks, and dependencies.
- Plan and facilitate workshops with MCPS teams, publishers, service partners, and industry bodies to understand needs and reach agreement.
- Manage conflicting requirements and priorities, negotiating agreed outcomes across stakeholder groups.
- Prepare clear, structured reporting, insight and documentation for governance forums, Boards, and committees.
Solution Delivery and Assurance
- Act as the bridge between the business and delivery teams (internal and vendor), ensuring requirements are understood and delivered as intended.
- Maintain requirements traceability and manage changes to scope through agreed change control.
- Support solution design and review vendor proposals and specifications against MCPS requirements.
- Define test scenarios and acceptance criteria and plan and coordinate user acceptance testing (UAT) with business users.
- Help define KPIs and success measures, and support benefits tracking after implementation.
- Prioritise analysis effort across parallel workstreams, using techniques such as MoSCoW, to maintain delivery momentum.
Change Readiness and Capability
- Carry out business change impact assessments and readiness analysis across people, process, data, and technology.
- Given the size and scale of the organisation, there will be occasions where hands-on operational support is required. While this is not the primary focus of the role, candidates should be comfortable adopting a pragmatic, sleeves-rolled-up approach when needed.
- Work with change and delivery colleagues to support adoption, including input to training materials, user guides, and communications.
- Work effectively in both Agile and Waterfall delivery approaches, adapting the analysis approach to suit.
- Mentor and coach colleagues, helping to build business analysis capability within MCPS.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and member-first thinking.
About you
Must have: experience in the music industry, rights management, royalties or collective management organisations, and an understanding of vendor-supplied systems and SLAs.
You will also demonstrate:
- A strong background in business analysis within change or transformation programmes is essential.
- Significant experience as a Business Analyst, including at a senior level, delivering business and technology change in complex organisations.
- As the technology function is being built experience in technology operations or IT service management would be advantageous.
- Proven ability to elicit and manage requirements and produce clear documentation, including requirements specifications, user stories, and process models.
- Strong process mapping and process improvement skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, translating complex data and operations into clear insights and priorities.
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills, with the confidence to present to executive leadership team members.
- Experience of system implementation, integration, or data migration projects, including planning and supporting UAT.
- Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall delivery methods, and tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Visio.
- A structured, pragmatic, and detail-focused approach, with the ability to manage multiple pieces of work in a fast-moving environment.
Desirable:
- Experience in data-intensive, technology-enabled environments, with strong data analysis skills (e.g. Excel, SQL or similar). Experience with machine learning.
- Professional certification such as the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis or IIBA CCBA/CBAP.
Benefits
- 28 days holiday plus bank holidays
- Pension contribution
- Critical illness insurance
- Income protection insurance
- Death in service benefit (after 2 years of service)
