(Senior) Underwriting Manager

About the role

Assess risks and make decisions to evaluate and approve complex or high-risk life and medical insurance applications, exercising substantial financial underwriting and complex medical impairment authority. Optimize the underwriting workflow, minimize pending application ratios, and improve straight-through processing (STP) rates. Ensure all underwriting decisions adhere to internal risk appetites, local regulations, and reinsurance guidelines.

Key responsibilities

• Assess risks and make decisions to evaluate and approve complex or high-risk life and medical insurance applications
• Supervise, train, and mentor junior underwriters
• Conduct performance reviews, manage case audits, and drive career development
• Optimize the underwriting workflow and minimize pending application ratios
• Improve straight-through processing (STP) rates
• Ensure all underwriting decisions adhere to internal risk appetites, local regulations, and reinsurance guidelines
• Provide underwriting insights for new product launches
• Update internal validation rules to minimize manual tasks
• Communicate with and provide support to relevant stakeholders and frontline parties

About you

• Bachelor's degree in finance, business, insurance, or actuarial science
• Typically 5 to 10+ years experience in life insurance underwriting
• Minimum of 2-5 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity
• Professional insurance designations highly desirable (e.g. FLMI, FALU)
• Deep knowledge of medical terminology, financial underwriting, reinsurance treaties, and regulatory requirements (such as AML, AEOI and FATCA)
• Excellent communications skills in English, Mandarin and Cantonese
