The supervisor coordinates with the Service Manager, Service Advisors, Parts, Warranty, Sales, and Rental departments to maintain workflow, communicate repair progress, and deliver equipment on schedule.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

Technician Leadership and Development

  • Assign work based on technician skill, job priority, and available resources.
  • Establish clear expectations for workmanship, productivity, attendance, and accountability.
  • Provide technical guidance on diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, and equipment diagnostics.
  • Coach technicians, identify training needs, and monitor completion of assigned training.
  • Provide performance feedback and assist the Service Manager with employee evaluations.

Shop Operations and Workflow

  • Review the daily workload and establish repair priorities and completion targets.
  • Monitor work in progress and address delays involving parts, approvals, technical support, or staffing.
  • Coordinate customer repairs, internal repairs, warranty work, preventive maintenance, and rental make-ready activities.
  • Communicate repair status, additional work requirements, and anticipated completion dates to Service Advisors and the Service Manager.
  • Maintain an organized shop with adequate tools, supplies, and functioning equipment.

Repair Quality and Documentation

  • Ensure repairs follow manufacturer procedures and approved estimates.
  • Verify that technicians accurately record labor time, diagnostic findings, parts used, and repair details.
  • Review completed work and confirm required operational checks are performed before equipment is released.
  • Ensure inspection and make-ready documentation is complete.
  • Investigate repeat repairs and comebacks, identify causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Support warranty documentation, service campaigns, and safety-letter completion.

Safety and Housekeeping

  • Enforce company safety procedures and required personal protective equipment.
  • Conduct weekly toolbox safety meetings and address unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Ensure equipment walkarounds are completed before movement and spotters are used when backing, in accordance with company policy.
  • Monitor safe lifting, blocking, stored-energy control, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain clean work areas and proper storage of tools, fluids, and materials.
  • Report incidents, equipment damage, and hazards to the Service Manager.

Productivity and Cost Control

  • Monitor technician productivity, labor efficiency, overtime, and repair turnaround.
  • Compare actual labor with estimates and communicate variances before additional work proceeds.
  • Reduce avoidable downtime, repeat repairs, and unnecessary expenses.
  • Protect company tools and assets and report missing or damaged items.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; diesel or heavy equipment technical education preferred.
  • Five or more years of heavy equipment repair experience preferred.
  • Previous experience as a lead technician, shop foreman, or supervisor preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic knowledge of construction equipment and related systems.
  • Ability to lead employees, manage competing priorities, and communicate clearly.
  • Proficiency with computerized work orders, manufacturer diagnostic software, and basic Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving requirements.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in a shop and equipment-yard environment, with exposure to noise, weather, dust, grease, and moving machinery. Duties involve standing, walking, bending, climbing, and working around heavy equipment. Occasional hands-on repairs, overtime, and schedule adjustments may be required.

Measures of Success

  • Safe shop and field operations and consistent safety participation.
  • Timely completion of repairs and rental make-ready work.
