Sharepoint Migration Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for a hands-on Technical Migration Engineer / SharePoint Migration Specialist to support a large-scale enterprise content migration programme.

The successful candidate will work alongside the Migration Lead and progressively take ownership of an independent migration stream, enabling multiple migrations to be executed in parallel.

The programme involves migrating enterprise documents, metadata, folder structures, permissions and document history from legacy Document Management Systems, primarily Alfresco, into Microsoft SharePoint Online.

This is a technical delivery role requiring strong PowerShell skills, structured troubleshooting, data analysis and the ability to independently execute migration batches from preparation through migration, reconciliation, and handover.

Key Responsibilities

Migration Execution

Own and execute assigned migration sites or batches through the complete migration lifecycle:

• Analyse source migration data and metadata.
• Prepare migration batches and staging structures.
• Validate document and folder mappings.
• Execute SharePoint migration using PowerShell and ShareGate.
• Monitor migration execution and resolve migration errors.
• Perform post-migration reconciliation and validation.
• Produce migration reports and exception reports.
• Support migration sign-off and handover.
• The engineer should gradually be capable of running a migration stream independently and in parallel with the Migration Lead.
• PowerShell Automation

Maintain, execute and troubleshoot PowerShell migration scripts used for:

• Document selection and version handling.
• Metadata transformation.
• Destination path generation.
• Folder creation.
• Document migration.
• Permission mapping and application.
• Retention label preparation.
• Reconciliation.
• Migration retry and recovery.
• Migration reporting.

The candidate does not need to design the entire migration framework from day one but must be comfortable reading, understanding, troubleshooting, and modifying existing PowerShell scripts.

SharePoint Online Migration

Work with SharePoint Online structures including:

• Sites.
• Document libraries.
• Folders.
• Metadata columns.
• Content types.
• Users and SharePoint groups.
• Permissions and permission inheritance.
• Retention labels.
• Document version history.

Support migration using tools such as:

• ShareGate.
• PnP PowerShell.
• SharePoint Online.
• Microsoft 365 administration tools.

Migration Data Analysis

Analyse large source metadata extracts and identify migration issues including:

• Missing or invalid paths.
• Duplicate documents.
• Invalid filenames.
• Long paths.
• Version inconsistencies.
• Metadata quality issues.
• Permission mapping issues.
• Missing users or groups.
• Destination path collisions.
• Documents requiring manual review.
• Work with CSV and Excel-based migration reports containing potentially hundreds of thousands of records.
• Permission Migration
• Support the migration of Alfresco permissions into SharePoint.

Responsibilities include:

• Analyse source users and groups.
• Review folder and document ACLs.
• Map source roles to SharePoint groups.
• Identify unique permissions.
• Identify inheritance scenarios.
• Review unmapped or individual users.
• Apply approved permissions.
• Verify permissions after migration.
• Migration Validation and Reconciliation
• Perform reconciliation between source and target environments.

Validation activities may include:

• Document counts.
• Folder counts.
• Migrated versus excluded documents.
• Metadata validation.
• Permission validation.
• Missing documents.
• Failed documents.
• Duplicate documents.
• Retention label validation.
• Source-to-target path verification.
• Produce clear exception reports for remediation.

Requirements:

Must Have

• Strong PowerShell scripting experience.
• Good understanding of Microsoft SharePoint Online.
• Experience working with large datasets using CSV, Excel or similar formats.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
• Ability to read and understand existing automation scripts.
• Experience analysing logs and resolving technical errors.
• Understanding of file systems, folders, paths and permissions.
• Familiarity with Microsoft 365 environments.
• Ability to work independently once processes have been established
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English
