Shop Assistant

Overview
We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic and customer-focused Shop Assistant to join our friendly team. The successful candidate will play an important role in the day-to-day running of the store, ensuring high standards of customer service, presentation and cleanliness are consistently maintained.

The role also involves receiving and unloading deliveries, moving stock and replenishing shelves, which can be physically demanding at times.

The ideal candidate must be proactive, alert and attentive at all times, with the ability to anticipate what needs to be done and respond quickly to changing priorities. Being observant, using initiative and maintaining awareness of both customers and the shop floor are essential to ensuring the store operates safely, efficiently and smoothly.

Candidates must be comfortable working under pressure, able to carry out manual handling tasks safely and efficiently, and willing to take responsibility for maintaining high standards throughout the store. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, reliability and a professional approach to customer service are essential.

Duties

• Customer Service: Welcome customers, provide friendly and helpful assistance, answer queries and ensure a positive shopping experience.
• Operating the Till: Process transactions accurately, handle cash and card payments, and follow the correct procedures including age-restricted sales.
• Receiving Deliveries: Unload deliveries, check stock against delivery notes, identify any discrepancies or damaged goods, and move stock safely into the appropriate storage areas.
• Stock Replenishment: Refill shelves, fridges and freezers promptly, ensuring products are well presented, correctly priced and easy for customers to find.
• Stock Rotation: Rotate products using the first-in, first-out principle, check dates regularly and remove expired or damaged products from sale.
• Maintaining Store Standards: Keep shelves, displays, counters, fridges and the shop floor clean, tidy and well organised throughout the shift.
• Proactive Working: Stay alert and aware of what is happening in the store, identify tasks that need attention and take initiative rather than waiting to be instructed.
• Monitoring the Shop Floor: Remain observant of customer activity, potential theft, spillages, hazards and any issues that could affect safety or the smooth running of the store.
• Working Under Pressure: Manage competing priorities effectively, particularly during busy periods, while maintaining high standards of accuracy and customer service.
• Teamwork: Communicate effectively with colleagues, support other team members and contribute to the overall success of the store.
• Following Procedures: Comply with company policies, health and safety requirements, age-verification procedures
• General Store Duties: Carry out additional reasonable tasks as required to support the day-to-day operation of the shop.

Experience

• Previous experience in retail or customer service is preferred
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• A friendly and approachable demeanour with a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service
• Flexibility to work varied shifts as required by the shop's operational needs
