What they need
Miranda Motors is seeking an experienced, hands-on Shop Manager to lead, organize, and improve our commercial truck service and reconditioning operation.
The Shop Manager will oversee our mechanical, paint, and reconditioning personnel and will be responsible for the day-to-day performance of the shop.
We are looking for more than an experienced technician or someone who simply keeps work moving. We are seeking a proven leader who can evaluate the current operation, identify problems, improve workflow, establish accountability, develop employees, and build a more efficient and professional shop operation.
The ideal candidate will combine strong commercial truck or heavy-duty technical knowledge with demonstrated management and operational leadership experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day shop operations, scheduling, and workflow
- Supervise mechanics, painters, preppers, and other shop personnel
- Assign work based on employee capabilities, priorities, and workload
- Monitor jobs from assignment through completion
- Establish clear expectations for productivity, quality, and completion times
- Identify and eliminate workflow bottlenecks and unnecessary downtime
- Improve shop organization, processes, procedures, and accountability
- Monitor technician productivity and overall shop performance
- Ensure completed work meets company quality standards
- Coordinate with the Sales Manager regarding trucks requiring inspection, mechanical repair, paint, or reconditioning
- Prioritize inventory preparation while effectively managing other shop workload
- Coordinate parts, materials, tools, and equipment required for shop operations
- Establish and monitor meaningful shop KPIs
- Maintain appropriate safety, equipment, and facility standards
- Evaluate employee performance and identify training or development needs
- Address performance issues and hold employees accountable
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating shop personnel
- Recommend staffing, equipment, process, and operational changes to management
- Develop a shop operation capable of supporting continued company growth
Shop Leadership & Improvement
A major responsibility of this position will be improving the operation, not simply maintaining the existing one.
The Shop Manager will be expected to evaluate existing personnel, workflows, procedures, systems, and performance and identify where changes are necessary.
We are looking for someone capable of determining:
- Where and why jobs are getting delayed
- Whether work is being scheduled and assigned effectively
- Whether employees are being utilized productively
- Where processes or accountability are lacking
- What systems and procedures should be implemented
- What staffing, training, equipment, or operational changes are necessary
The Shop Manager will have meaningful authority over daily shop operations and will work directly with management to implement improvements.
Qualifications
- Significant commercial truck, heavy-duty, diesel, fleet, automotive, equipment, or related service experience
- Previous Shop Manager, Service Manager, Foreman, or significant team-lead experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of mechanical repair, diagnostics, and reconditioning operations
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, develop, and hold technicians accountable
- Strong scheduling, workflow, and organizational skills
- Understanding of labor productivity, utilization, and shop efficiency
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability
- Ability to identify operational problems and implement practical solutions
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work effectively with technicians, management, vendors, and other departments
- Comfortable operating in a hands-on, privately held business environment
- Commercial truck or heavy-duty experience strongly preferred
- Experience improving, building, or restructuring a service/shop operation strongly preferred
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Business, Operations Management, Automotive/Diesel Technology, or a related field preferred but not required. An equivalent combination of relevant technical experience and demonstrated management experience will be strongly considered.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is not simply the best mechanic in the shop.
We are looking for someone who understands the technical work but is primarily capable of leading people and managing an operation.
The right person should be able to walk into an existing shop, understand how work currently flows, identify what is not working, establish better systems, develop the team, and create accountability for results.
This person should be comfortable making decisions, addressing performance issues, recommending changes, and taking ownership of the overall performance of the shop.
Position Objective
Success will be measured by the Shop Manager's ability to build a more productive, organized, accountable, and scalable shop operation.
Key outcomes will include improved productivity, faster turnaround times, better workflow, consistent quality, stronger employee accountability, improved utilization of labor and resources, and a shop capable of supporting the continued growth of Miranda Motors.
A college degree is preferred but not required. Proven shop leadership, technical knowledge, operational judgment, and demonstrated ability to improve shop performance will carry greater weight.
Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
Benefits:
