What they need
Stone Fabrication Shop Supervisor
Job Responsibilities
Position Summary
The Stone Fabrication Shop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the fabrication shop and ensuring that jobs move safely, efficiently, and accurately through production.
The Supervisor is responsible for coordinating employees, equipment, materials, and workflow to meet daily and weekly production targets while maintaining company standards for quality, safety, and workmanship.
The Shop Supervisor works closely with the Shop Coordinator, CNC operators, saw operators, fabricators, polishers, Quality Control, installation teams, and management to identify and resolve production issues before they affect installation schedules.
Daily Production & Workflow
- Review the day's production schedule and priorities with the Shop Coordinator and production team.
- Ensure employees understand which jobs are priority and the required completion times.
- Assign employees to machines, fabrication areas, and other tasks based on workload and production requirements.
- Monitor jobs as they move through cutting, CNC/router processing, fabrication, polishing, QC, and staging.
- Maintain continuous workflow and minimize situations where employees or machines are waiting for work.
- Identify bottlenecks and reallocate labour when necessary to keep production moving.
- Ensure priority jobs and installation-critical pieces are completed on schedule.
- Monitor production throughout the shift and adjust the plan when unexpected issues arise.
- Communicate production delays or concerns to management as soon as they are identified.
Employee Supervision
- Direct and supervise shop employees throughout the shift.
- Clearly communicate expectations, priorities, and responsibilities.
- Ensure employees remain productive and focused on assigned work.
- Monitor employee performance, workmanship, attendance, and adherence to company procedures.
- Coach employees when performance or workmanship does not meet expectations.
- Identify training requirements and assist with employee development.
- Ensure new employees receive appropriate training before operating equipment independently.
- Help develop cross-trained employees who can work in multiple areas of production.
- Address employee issues professionally and escalate significant performance or disciplinary matters to management.
- Promote teamwork and accountability throughout the shop.
Quality Control
- Ensure jobs are fabricated according to drawings, digital templates, job notes, and company quality standards.
- Confirm employees review job-specific instructions before beginning fabrication.
- Ensure critical dimensions, edge profiles, sink details, cutouts, seams, mitres, finished edges, and other job requirements are verified.
- Ensure pieces receive the required quality-control inspection before being approved for installation.
- Investigate quality issues and determine where in the production process the problem occurred.
- Reduce remakes by identifying recurring errors and implementing corrective actions.
- Ensure damaged, questionable, or non-conforming pieces are identified and reported immediately rather than being sent to installation.
Machinery & Equipment
- Ensure CNC routers, bridge saws, waterjets, polishers, material-handling equipment, and other shop equipment are operated correctly.
- Ensure operators perform required daily equipment inspections and maintenance.
- Monitor tooling condition and ensure worn or damaged tooling is replaced before it affects quality or equipment.
- Immediately investigate unusual machine operation, vibration, noise, tool breakage, crashes, or other equipment concerns.
- Ensure machine problems are reported and documented.
- Coordinate maintenance and repairs with management and maintenance personnel.
- Prevent employees from operating equipment that is unsafe or could cause additional machine damage.
Material Handling
- Ensure slabs and fabricated pieces are handled safely and correctly.
- Confirm the correct material is being used for each job before fabrication begins.
- Ensure pieces are properly labelled and remain identifiable throughout production.
- Ensure finished pieces are safely stored and staged for installation.
- Minimize material damage, breakage, and unnecessary waste.
- Ensure remnants and reusable material are handled according to company procedures.
Safety
- Maintain a safe and organized shop environment.
- Enforce company safety policies and WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Ensure employees use required personal protective equipment.
- Ensure proper procedures are followed when handling slabs and operating cranes, forklifts, vacuum lifters, saws, CNC equipment, and other machinery.
- Correct unsafe behaviour immediately.
- Report and document incidents, near misses, equipment damage, and safety concerns.
- Ensure aisles, work areas, emergency exits, and equipment access areas remain clean and unobstructed.
- Participate in safety meetings and help implement corrective actions when hazards are identified.
Production Performance
The Shop Supervisor is responsible for helping the shop achieve measurable production targets, including:
- Square feet fabricated per shift/day.
- Jobs completed on schedule.
- Machine utilization and reduction of unnecessary downtime.
- Labour efficiency and productive hours.
- Remake and rework rates.
- Material breakage and damage.
- Quality-control failures.
- On-time completion of jobs required for installation.
The Supervisor should understand the expected production capacity of the shop and actively manage labour and workflow to achieve those targets.
End-of-Shift Responsibilities
Before the end of each shift, the Shop Supervisor will:
- Review completed versus scheduled production.
- Identify jobs that were not completed and document the reason.
- Confirm priority work for the following shift/day.
- Ensure unfinished pieces are clearly identified.
- Communicate machine problems, material shortages, quality concerns, and production delays.
- Ensure the shop is left clean, organized, and ready for the next shift.
Accountability
The Shop Supervisor is ultimately responsible for the execution of the daily production plan on the shop floor.
The position is expected to proactively identify problems rather than waiting for them to affect production. When production falls behind, the Supervisor should be able to explain the cause, identify the corrective action required, and implement changes to recover the schedule.
Success in this position is measured by maintaining a safe workplace while consistently achieving production targets, minimizing remakes and downtime, maintaining high-quality workmanship, and ensuring jobs are completed on time for installation.
