What they need
Best Fire Hearth & Patio is looking for a skilled, hands-on Shop Technician / Installation Support team member. This is a full-time or part-time hybrid position combining skilled shop work with field installation support.
The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude and experience with carpentry, metal fabrication, construction, or a related trade. When shop workload allows, this position will serve as a floater for our installation team—helping cover vacations and call-outs and providing an additional installer on larger or more complex projects.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, building and fabricating, and working with their hands.
What You'll Do
Your primary responsibility will be completing skilled fabrication, carpentry, preparation, repair, and maintenance work in our shop. Responsibilities will include:
- Fabricating fireplace risers, surrounds, mortar forms, backer panels, and other custom components
- Building wood-framed risers, walls, fireplace chases, and exterior chases
- Performing metal fabrication and modifications to steel surrounds, fireplace components, and related products
- Cutting and preparing stone for fireplace installations and custom applications
- Preparing fireplaces and related products for upcoming installations
- Assisting with fuel conversions and other technical product preparation
- Repairing and maintaining tools, equipment, jigs, and shop fixtures
- Performing basic facility repairs and maintenance
- Testing and preparing pellet stoves as needed
- Repairing and assembling outdoor furniture
- Performing umbrella repairs and re-slings
- Preparing outdoor kitchen components, including basic electrical preparation
- Assisting with furniture deliveries and installations during outdoor-living season
- Supporting warehouse operations when necessary, including receiving and checking incoming shipments
- Serving as an additional member of the installation team when field support is needed
Schedule & Role Structure
This is a full-time or part-time position with a combination of shop and field work.
The anticipated base schedule is a mix of days at the shop and days in the field, although the schedule will fluctuate based on installation schedules, seasonal demand, project deadlines, vacations, call-outs, and business needs.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with the same core mechanical and construction abilities we value in our fireplace installers. Previous fireplace experience is helpful but not required. Many of the product-specific responsibilities can be taught to the right person.
Strong candidates will have experience in one or more of the following:
- Carpentry, framing, or construction
- Metal fabrication and/or welding
- Mechanical installation or repair
- Reading measurements and accurately fabricating components
- Using saws, drills, grinders, hand tools, and other shop equipment
- Troubleshooting and solving problems independently
Skills That Matter
This position requires more than technical ability. Because shop projects directly support scheduled installations, the Shop Technician must be able to manage multiple projects and understand which work needs to be completed first.
The right person will be able to:
- Manage their time with limited supervision
- Prioritize work based on upcoming installation schedules
- Assess project requirements and determine what needs to be completed
- Recognize potential problems before they delay a job
- Make sound decisions to keep projects on schedule
- Transition between shop, warehouse, and field responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with installers, warehouse staff, and managers
- Maintain an organized and safe work environment
- Produce accurate, high-quality work
Why This Position Is Unique
This isn't a repetitive shop job. One day you may be fabricating a custom fireplace component, the next building a framed chase, repairing equipment, preparing an outdoor kitchen, or helping an installation crew complete a larger fireplace project.
The position provides an opportunity to develop skills across carpentry, fabrication, fireplace installation, outdoor living products, equipment repair, and construction while becoming a versatile member of the Best Fire team.
Compensation
Competitive hourly compensation based on experience and skill level, ranging from $25-$35/hour.
