Site Engineer (Mandarin Speaking)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Site Engineer (Mandarin Speaking) to join our team at China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Kuching, Sarawak. This is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in the successful execution of civil and structural engineering projects. As Site Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing construction activities on-site, ensuring quality standards are maintained, and facilitating effective communication between our local teams and Chinese management staff. Your expertise and language capabilities will be instrumental in bridging communication gaps and ensuring project milestones are achieved on schedule and within budget.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate daily construction activities, ensuring compliance with engineering plans, specifications, and safety regulations
• Monitor construction progress and prepare detailed progress reports for management and stakeholders
• Conduct quality inspections and testing of materials, workmanship, and structural elements to ensure they meet project specifications
• Provide technical support and guidance to construction teams and subcontractors on-site
• Manage site safety protocols and ensure all workers adhere to health and safety requirements
• Act as a liaison between Chinese management, local teams, and clients, providing accurate translation and interpretation of technical matters
• Document site activities, including daily logs, inspection records, and photographic evidence
• Identify and address construction challenges, recommending practical solutions in consultation with project management
• Maintain communication with design teams and consultants regarding design clarifications and technical issues
• Assist in procurement and inventory management of construction materials and equipment

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline
• Minimum 3–5 years of site-based experience in civil or structural engineering projects
• Fluency in Mandarin Chinese (speaking, reading, and writing) and English
• Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and structural design principles
• Experience with project management software and construction documentation systems
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across multicultural teams
• Proficiency in technical drawing interpretation and site surveying techniques
• Valid driving licence and willingness to work on-site in various weather conditions
• Professional certification or membership with relevant engineering bodies is desirable
• Experience working on large-scale infrastructure or commercial projects is preferred
