What they need

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and capable Site Manager to join our established forestry and landscaping business, with an annual turnover of approximately £5 million and a team of around 25 employees.

The Site Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management and delivery of works across a range of sites, working closely with the Contracts Manager to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and to the required standard.

The business works with a mixture of large commercial clients and smaller customers. The successful candidate will therefore need to be comfortable working within a structured principal-contractor environment on larger projects, while also maintaining a practical and customer-focused approach on smaller sites.

One of the key contracts involves working with Galliford Try, requiring a high level of professionalism, organisation, site discipline and compliance with client requirements.

This is a hands-on role for someone who takes ownership of site delivery and can manage people, resources and problems effectively.

Key Responsibilities

· Site Management

· Take day-to-day responsibility for the successful running of allocated sites.

· Plan, coordinate and supervise site activities to ensure works are delivered efficiently and in accordance with the programme.

· Manage site operatives, supervisors, subcontractors and plant.

· Allocate labour and resources to ensure sites are adequately resourced.

· Monitor progress and productivity and take action where performance is falling behind.

· Ensure works are carried out in accordance with drawings, specifications, scopes and agreed standards.

· Maintain high standards of workmanship and presentation.

· Coordinate deliveries, materials, plant and equipment.

· Ensure sites are properly set up, maintained and closed down on completion.

· Identify issues early and work with the Contracts Manager to resolve them.

Working With the Contracts Manager

The Site Manager will work closely with the Contracts Manager, who retains overall responsibility for the commercial and contractual performance of the contracts. The Site Manager will:

· Provide regular updates to the Contracts Manager on progress, labour, plant, materials and programme.

· Highlight potential delays, additional works, client issues and resource requirements at the earliest opportunity.

· Provide accurate information to support variations, valuations and commercial reporting.

· Record and communicate any changes to the agreed scope of works.

· Escalate contractual or commercial issues rather than committing the business to additional costs or works without approval.

· Work with the Contracts Manager to plan labour, plant and resources across multiple sites.

· Support the Contracts Manager with client and subcontractor meetings where required.

· Implement agreed commercial and operational decisions on site.

· Ensure the Contracts Manager has accurate site information to enable effective management of the overall contract.

The Site Manager is responsible for delivering the work on site; the Contracts Manager is responsible for managing the wider contract, client relationship and commercial performance.

Client & Principal Contractor Relationships

· Maintain professional working relationships with clients, principal contractors and site representatives.

· Attend site meetings and coordination meetings as required.

· Represent the company professionally at all times.

· Respond promptly to day-to-day site queries.

· Ensure client requirements are understood and communicated to the site team.

· Develop particularly strong working relationships with principal contractors such as Galliford Try.

· Escalate significant client, programme or contractual issues to the Contracts Manager.

Health, Safety & Compliance

· Take day-to-day responsibility for health and safety on allocated sites.

· Ensure RAMS are understood, communicated and followed.

· Conduct and record site inspections and briefings as required.

· Ensure site operatives and subcontractors work safely and in accordance with company and client requirements.

· Ensure appropriate PPE, equipment and control measures are in place.

· Report accidents, incidents and near misses promptly.

· Maintain appropriate site records and documentation.

· Ensure environmental requirements and site controls are followed.

· Stop unsafe work where necessary and escalate issues appropriately.

People Management

· Lead and motivate site teams to deliver high-quality work.

· Allocate daily tasks and ensure operatives understand what is expected.

· Monitor attendance, timekeeping, productivity and performance.

· Provide guidance and support to less experienced members of the team.

· Identify training and development requirements.

· Deal with day-to-day performance or conduct issues and escalate significant matters to management.

· Promote a positive, professional and accountable site culture.

Programme & Productivity

· Monitor progress against the agreed programme.

· Plan daily and weekly site activities.

· Identify potential delays and agree corrective action with the Contracts Manager.

· Monitor labour and plant productivity.

· Minimise downtime and unnecessary costs.

· Ensure materials and plant are available when required.

· Coordinate activities between different trades, teams and subcontractors.

· Provide realistic progress updates rather than allowing issues to develop unnoticed.

Quality & Completion

· Ensure work is completed to the required specification and standard.

· Carry out quality checks throughout the project.

· Identify defects or incomplete works and ensure they are rectified promptly.

· Maintain site records, photographs and relevant documentation.

· Assist with snagging, completion and handover.

· Ensure sites are left clean, safe and professionally presented.

Commercial Awareness

Although the Contracts Manager retains overall commercial responsibility, the Site Manager is expected to have a strong understanding of how their decisions affect project profitability.

You will be expected to:

· Avoid unnecessary labour, plant and material costs.

· Monitor productivity.

· Identify potential variations and additional works.

· Notify the Contracts Manager before undertaking work outside the agreed scope wherever practical.

· Protect company resources and minimise waste.

· Ensure accurate timesheets, delivery records and site information are maintained.

· Understand the financial impact of delays, rework and poor planning.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally have:

· Proven experience as a Site Manager, Site Supervisor or similar role.

· Experience managing multiple sites or working across different projects.

· Experience within forestry, landscaping, grounds maintenance, construction, civil engineering or a related industry.

· Strong knowledge of site health and safety requirements.

· Experience working for or alongside principal contractors.

· Experience managing site teams and subcontractors.

· Good organisational and planning skills.

· Strong communication skills.

· The ability to read and understand drawings, specifications and RAMS.

· The confidence to deal professionally with clients and other contractors.

· A full UK driving licence.

Desirable Qualifications

· SMSTS or SSSTS.

· CSCS.

· First Aid.

· IOSH or similar health and safety qualification.

· Relevant forestry, landscaping, arboriculture or construction qualifications.

· Experience working on Tier 1/main contractor sites.

· Experience working with companies such as Galliford Try or similar principal contractors.

Personal Qualities

We are looking for someone who is:

· Hands-on – willing to get involved and make things happen.

· Organised – able to keep control of several moving parts.

· Proactive – identifies problems before they become expensive problems.

· Calm under pressure – particularly when dealing with demanding sites or clients.

· Commercially aware – understands the impact of site decisions on the company's profitability.

· A good communicator – keeps the Contracts Manager informed rather than allowing issues to build.

· A strong leader – gets the best out of site teams.

· Professional – particularly when representing the company on larger commercial sites.

· Accountable – takes ownership of site delivery.

· Solutions focused – looks for practical ways to keep work moving.

Measures of Success

The successful Site Manager will be judged on:

· Safe delivery of works.

· Quality of workmanship.

· Programme performance.

· Productivity of site teams.

· Effective use of labour, plant and materials.

· Client and principal contractor satisfaction.

· Accurate site records and communication.

· Early identification and escalation of problems.

· Successful completion and handover of projects.

· Contribution to the profitability of contracts.
