Lead Site Reliability & Observability Engineer

West Midlands (hybrid) | 6-month contract

The opportunity

A global technology business is looking for a Lead SRE / Observability Engineer to build its monitoring and reliability platform from the ground up. There is no existing Datadog setup and little SRE practice today, so this is a true greenfield project. You’ll define the strategy, implement it hands-on and leave the engineering teams with a platform they can rely on.

The goal is simple: catch issues within minutes of a release, before customers notice.

What you’ll be doing

• Designing and implementing Datadog across an Azure and Cloudflare estate
• Building synthetic monitoring for critical APIs, integrations and customer journeys
• Embedding automated release validation into Azure DevOps and GitHub pipelines
• Delivering monitoring-as-code and testing-as-code with Terraform
• Creating actionable dashboards, SLOs, SLIs, alerting and anomaly detection
• Leading root-cause analysis and improving reliability and performance across production
• Advising engineering teams and building SRE practices that last beyond the engagement

What you’ll bring

• Strong hands-on Datadog experience, ideally including a build from scratch, covering:
• Synthetics
• APM
• RUM
• Log Management
• SLOs and Alerting
• Deep Azure experience and a solid understanding of how a complex estate fits together
• Terraform, ideally including managing Datadog resources as code
• Strong CI/CD experience with Azure DevOps and GitHub
• API, integration and browser-based testing expertise
• Experience with large-scale, cloud-native SaaS platforms, microservices and distributed systems
• A consultative approach and the confidence to set direction, not just take tickets

Nice to have

• Cloudflare integration and administration
• Datadog and/or Azure certifications
• SRE or Platform Engineering leadership experience
