What they need
We are seeking an experienced Skipper to join the Drysdale, one of Sanford’s dedicated deepwater scampi vessels.
The Drysdale forms part of Sanford’s seven-vessel scampi fleet, operating as a triple trawl vessel targeting the scampi fisheries. At approximately 24.9 metres, this vessel operates with a small crew of 6 people, making teamwork, communication and strong leadership particularly important onboard. The vessel is expected to be in port around 29 September 2026, presenting an opportunity for an experienced fishing professional to step into a key leadership position within Sanford’s Wildcatch operation.
Voyages are typically 4–6 weeks, followed by approximately 4–6 weeks ashore. This is an Independent Contractor (self-employed) position, with Sanford covering return travel from your hometown to the vessel’s departure port.
Responsibilities
As Skipper, you’ll take overall responsibility for the safe, efficient and productive operation of the Drysdale, including:
- Fishing within designated quota areas and managing the voyage catch plan, adapting operations as required.
- Leading and managing a small vessel crew in a 24-hour deepwater fishing environment.
- Ensuring vessel operations comply with Sanford standards, MPI requirements, MOSS, Maritime NZ legislation and New Zealand law.
- Managing navigation, fishing operations, weather conditions and overall vessel safety.
- Supervising, supporting and developing crew to maintain safe and effective onboard operations.
- Working closely with the Vessel Manager to coordinate fuel, provisions, fishing gear, maintenance and repairs.
- Operating the vessel to maximise catch quality and quantity while protecting the safety and wellbeing of the crew and vessel.
- Maintaining accurate vessel records and regular communication with the shore-based team.
- Supporting the quality handling of scampi to ensure Sanford continues to deliver a premium product.
About you
You’ll be an experienced fishing professional who is comfortable taking responsibility for both the vessel and the people onboard. With a small crew of 6, the Drysdale requires a Skipper who is hands-on, approachable and willing to work alongside the crew when required. You’ll be able to make sound decisions under pressure, communicate clearly and create an onboard environment where safety, teamwork and performance are equally important. You’ll understand the demands of spending extended periods at sea and be comfortable working within a 24-hour fishing operation.
What we’re looking for
- Skipper Fishing Vessel (SFV) certificate or equivalent.
- Current Maritime Medical, or ability to obtain one.
- Proven commercial fishing experience, ideally within scampi, trawl or deepwater fishing operations.
- Experience leading and managing crew onboard a commercial fishing vessel.
- Sound knowledge of New Zealand maritime and fisheries requirements, including MOSS, HSWA, Fisheries legislation and MPI requirements.
- Strong communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- A practical, safety-focused leadership style and willingness to be part of a close-knit onboard team.
Why Sanford?
The Drysdale offers the opportunity to lead one of Sanford’s specialised deepwater scampi vessels while working within a small, experienced crew and a well-supported wider fleet. You’ll have the backing of an experienced shore-based Wildcatch team and Vessel Managers, while still having the autonomy and responsibility that comes with leading a vessel at sea. With a 4–6 week trip rotation, extended time ashore between voyages and travel to and from the vessel covered by Sanford, the role offers a lifestyle that can be difficult to find in traditional shore-based work.
Sanford is one of New Zealand’s largest seafood companies, with opportunities across our inshore, deepwater and Antarctic operations. For the right person, joining the Drysdale could be the next step in a long-term career within Sanford’s wider fleet.
You must be eligible to work in New Zealand. Our recruitment process includes pre-engagement checks including a criminal history check, drug and alcohol testing, and a medical assessment.
