About the role

As a Skipper at Chris Jolly Outdoors, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and professional operation of commercial vessels on Lake Taupō. You will play a key role in delivering exceptional on-water experiences, including scenic cruises, private charters, and fishing trips. You are expected to uphold the company's high safety, service, and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate vessels in accordance with Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) regulations and company SOPs.
• Conduct pre-departure safety checks and ensure all equipment is functional.
• Navigate and berth vessels safely in varying weather and lake conditions.
• Maintain a high standard of seamanship and situational awareness.
• Deliver engaging, informative, and friendly commentary on Lake Taupō's history, geography, and culture.
• Ensure passengers feel welcome, comfortable, and safe throughout their trip.
• Take full responsibility for the safety of all passengers and crew onboard.
• Ensure safety briefings are delivered and understood.
• Complete all logs and documentation accurately (e.g., manifest, incident reports, maintenance).
• Respond confidently and competently in emergency situations.

About you

• Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) Certificate or higher (MNZ-approved).
• Valid First Aid Certificate.
• Maritime radio operator qualification (e.g., VHF).
• Minimum 1 year commercial vessel experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of maritime safety procedures and local operating conditions.
• Physically fit and able to perform manual tasks.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to remain calm and take charge under pressure.
