What they need
About the role
Wānaka Powersports cover just about everything with an engine that gets you outdoors: motorcycles, boats, outboards, snowmobiles and outdoor power equipment. The team are locals who get out into the same places as the people they look after.
They need a Small Engine Technician to work on outboards and outdoor power equipment in their workshop. In any given week, that could mean a Husqvarna one day and a Yamaha outboard the next.
What you'll be doing
- Working through repair orders and testing to find the fault
- Servicing and repairing outboards and power equipment within allocated job times
- Diagnosing faults, electrical included, and getting to the root cause
- Dismantling and rebuilding, repairing or replacing engines, parts and systems
- Assembling new units and completing the pre-delivery checks and paperwork
- Keeping the service team in the loop on job progress and any changes
- Helping with quotes, parts recommendations and warranty claims
- Ordering parts and letting the parts team know when workshop stock runs low
- Advising customers and following up on their questions
- Keeping job cards accurate and current
- Achieving and holding gold status (or equivalent) under the dealer development programme
- Cleaning and detailing gear, keeping the workshop tidy, and helping open and close
What you'll need
- A National Certificate in Motorcycle Engineering or Marine Systems, Level 4 or higher
- Proven experience diagnosing electrical faults on small engines and power equipment
- A full, clean NZ driver licence. A Class 6 endorsement would be a bonus
- A Light Vehicle Inspector (NZTA) qualification would also be a plus
- Confidence using computers, filling in job cards and working with numbers
You like knowing how things work, and you don't let the small details slide. You can keep a steady pace when the workshop is busy, get on with your jobs without being chased, and you care about the customer leaving happy.
What makes it worth it
Variety is the big one. Outboards and power equipment are different beasts, and you'll work across both, on brands including Yamaha, Honda Marine, Parsun and Husqvarna. When new gear comes in, you'll be the one setting it up and getting it ready to go. When something plays up, you'll be the one working out what's really behind it. You'll be doing it from a brand new workshop with modern tools, alongside a team who live for this stuff themselves.
Then there is the location. Wānaka sits on the edge of its lake with the Southern Alps behind it. It's small enough to feel like a community, with Queenstown about an hour over the Crown Range when you want a bigger town.
The hourly rate is up there with the best in the industry, set on your qualifications and experience.
New workshop, new tools, to help you get stuck in.
Good to know
The role is based in Wānaka. If you're moving from elsewhere, there's financial support to help you get here.
You must have full New Zealand working rights to be considered for this role.
