What they need

Position Summary

The Snow Operator safely and efficiently performs snow and ice management services using approved equipment on assigned routes or properties. This seasonal hourly / nonexempt role reports to the Field Supervisor / Operations Manager and requires prior experience, on-call availability, and strong safety, quality, and communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate plow trucks, spreaders, skid steers, loaders, and other snow equipment only when trained and authorized.

  • Plow lots, drives, access lanes, and loading areas according to route priorities, site instructions, and standards.

  • Apply deicers according to company direction and site conditions; assist with sidewalks, cleanup, and materials.

  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and immediately report equipment defects, damage, or unsafe conditions.

  • Monitor accumulation, ice, visibility, traction, refreeze risk, and changing road and site conditions throughout each event.

  • Protect parked vehicles, curbs, landscaping, buildings, light poles, pedestrians, and other property while navigating confined areas.

  • Promptly report route progress, delays, hazards, incidents, injuries, property damage, and equipment concerns.

  • Follow PPE requirements, winter procedures, and supervisor instructions; maintain safe speeds, alertness, and a steady work pace without sacrificing quality.

  • Maintain dependable attendance and prompt call-in response; remain on duty until assigned work is completed or management releases the employee.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional snow and ice management or comparable winter equipment operating experience is required.

  • Safely operate at least one applicable piece of snow equipment and work independently with sound judgment.

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record required when operating company vehicles; maintain both for continued driving duties.

  • Must successfully pass the company-required pre-employment background check and drug test.

  • Reliable winter transportation; understand route instructions, site maps, assignments, and supervisor direction.

  • Prompt response to weather-driven call-ins and required on-call availability, including nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Work outdoors for extended periods in snow, sleet, freezing rain, wind, darkness, extreme cold, and wind chill.

  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, twist, push, pull, climb, and balance on icy, wet, uneven, snowy, or sloped surfaces.

  • Lift and carry at least 50 pounds of tools, salt, and materials, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Work around moving vehicles, winter equipment, traffic, loud noise, vibration, exhaust, salt, moisture, and slush.

  • Work extended or overnight shifts and overtime as required by storm duration, accumulation, route conditions, and client needs while maintaining alertness.

Advancement

Strong attendance, safety, reliability, and performance may lead to consideration for a regular position when company needs and openings allow. Seasonal service alone does not guarantee advancement.

General Employment Statement: Employment is seasonal and weather-dependent; hours are not guaranteed. Duties and schedules may change based on weather, staffing, client needs, equipment availability, and business requirements. Related duties may be assigned. Employment is at will, subject to applicable law.
