Employer Overview Big Rock Ski Area is a nonprofit mountain resort located in northern Maine, just a few miles from the Canadian border. Since the 1960s, we have been an integral part of the Aroostook County community, offering classic Maine skiing with a welcoming and down-to-earth atmosphere. With nearly 1,000 feet of vertical drop, a newly upgraded snowmaking system, and a state-of-the-art chairlift, we provide a variety of terrain suitable for all skill levels. Big Rock goes above and beyond to exceed expectations, and we take pride in that.

We are not just a place to ski; we are a community where you can develop your skills, meet great people, and enjoy the outdoors. This sense of community is central to our mission as a nonprofit organization.

As an employer, we value hard work and teamwork. At Big Rock, your efforts truly matter, and you can see the difference you make every day. If you appreciate working in an environment where people support each other and share a love for winter, we believe you’ll be a great fit here.

Position Overview Big Rock Ski Area is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Snow School Director to lead and grow our ski and snowboard instruction programs. This hands-on leadership position is responsible for the daily operations of the Snow School, including supervising instructors, scheduling lessons, training staff, providing guest services, and developing programs.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned ski or snowboard instructor and leader who enjoys working with people of all ages and abilities. This individual should be passionate about teaching, mentoring other instructors, creating a positive guest experience, and helping more people discover the joy of skiing and snowboarding.

The Snow School Director will collaborate closely with the Assistant General Manager and other department heads to ensure that Big Rock’s lesson programs are safe, organized, financially viable, and consistent with the welcoming, community-focused atmosphere of the mountain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operation of Big Rock’s Snow School, including lessons for youth and adults.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Snow School instructors.
  • Develop and maintain instructor schedules based on lesson demand, staffing, and mountain operations.
  • Lead instructor training and professional development throughout the season.
  • Maintain a high standard of lesson quality, safety, professionalism, and guest service.
  • Teach lessons as needed and remain actively involved in the Snow School on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate lesson programs, including lessons, youth programs, and special events.
  • Perform as intermediary for Ski4Life and program coordinators.
  • Work with the marketing to promote Snow School programs and identify opportunities.
  • Communicate with guests regarding lesson programs, scheduling, expectations, and concerns.
  • Maintain accurate instructor records, certifications, training documentation, and schedules.
  • Help develop new programs and improve existing programs based on guest feedback and participation.
  • Participate in preseason planning, hiring, training, and end-of-season program evaluation.
  • Be available to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and other peak operating periods as required.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience as a ski or snowboard instructor.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong skiing and/or snowboarding ability with a passion for teaching.
  • Experience working with children, families, and adult learners.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or supervising instructors or other staff.
  • PSIA-AASI certification or equivalent professional ski/snowboard instruction certification preferred.
  • Basic computer literacy, including email, spreadsheets, scheduling, and registration systems.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable winter conditions, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to ski or snowboard regularly as part of the position.
  • Strong commitment to safety, guest service, and creating a positive learning environment.
