What they need

Snow Zone ManagerPosition Summary

The Snow Zone Manager is responsible for overseeing and supporting snow and ice operations within an assigned zone during winter weather events. This position serves as the primary field representative between the branch, subcontractors, operators, and customers.

The primary responsibility of the Zone Manager is oversight, communication, documentation, quality control, and problem-solving. The Zone Manager will travel between assigned properties in a company vehicle to inspect site conditions, monitor subcontractor performance, document operations, identify concerns, and communicate accurate information back to the branch.

Snow removal and ice management services are primarily the responsibility of the assigned subcontractors and crews. The Zone Manager is not intended to replace or supplement the subcontractor's normal staffing.

However, the Zone Manager should be a hands-on, solutions-oriented leader. If they identify a minor or isolated issue that can be safely and quickly corrected—such as a small slippery area, an entrance needing attention, or another immediate concern—they should be willing to address it when appropriate rather than simply driving past the issue.

The ideal candidate is an experienced field leader who understands snow and ice operations, can manage multiple subcontractors and properties, communicates effectively, recognizes problems early, and takes ownership of their assigned zone.

Key ResponsibilitiesZone & Site Oversight

  • Oversee snow and ice operations across all assigned properties within the designated zone.
  • Understand the site-specific snow plan, service expectations, priorities, and scope of work for each property.
  • Travel between assigned properties throughout the storm to monitor conditions and service quality.
  • Inspect parking lots, roadways, loading areas, sidewalks, entrances, fire lanes, ADA areas, and other priority areas.
  • Verify that subcontractors and crews are performing work according to established expectations and site-specific requirements.
  • Monitor snow accumulation, pavement conditions, changing weather conditions, and potential refreeze.
  • Identify service deficiencies, safety concerns, or areas requiring additional attention.
  • Communicate deficiencies to the responsible subcontractor and verify that corrective action is completed.
  • Coordinate with the branch when additional resources, equipment, labor, or operational support may be required.
  • Maintain an understanding of the overall status of every property within the assigned zone.
  • Make sound field decisions while keeping branch leadership informed of significant issues.

Subcontractor Coordination

  • Maintain professional communication with subcontractors, operators, and field crews throughout each event.
  • Clearly communicate site expectations and identified service concerns.
  • Hold subcontractors accountable for completing their assigned scope of work.
  • Monitor staffing, equipment, and operational progress.
  • Identify when a subcontractor or site is beginning to fall behind and communicate concerns before they become larger operational issues.
  • Assist in coordinating resources when directed by branch leadership.
  • Escalate repeated performance concerns or significant service deficiencies to the branch.
  • Maintain positive working relationships while ensuring company and customer expectations are met.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Take clear and useful photographs documenting site conditions and completed work.
  • Document conditions throughout the event, including areas of concern and corrective actions.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the branch throughout the storm.
  • Provide concise and accurate status updates for assigned properties.
  • Immediately report significant operational problems, equipment failures, staffing concerns, incidents, property damage, customer concerns, or safety issues.
  • Complete all required storm documentation before, during, and after the event.
  • Ensure documentation provides an accurate record of site conditions and services performed.

Field Support & Problem-Solving

The Zone Manager's primary responsibility is to manage and oversee the operation, not perform the subcontractor's contracted work.

However, the Zone Manager is expected to take reasonable action when minor issues can be safely and efficiently corrected.

Examples may include:

  • Addressing a small isolated slippery area with ice-melting material.
  • Correcting a minor condition at an entrance or other high-priority area.
  • Helping identify or troubleshoot a basic equipment issue.
  • Assisting an operator in determining whether an equipment issue is operational or mechanical.
  • Helping coordinate equipment or resources when a site experiences a problem.
  • Operating snow equipment when qualified and when an unusual operational situation requires temporary assistance.
  • Taking reasonable immediate action to address a safety concern while the responsible subcontractor is being notified.

The expectation is not for the Zone Manager to routinely shovel, salt, plow, or perform the subcontractor's work.

The expectation is for the Zone Manager to recognize problems, take ownership, coordinate the appropriate solution, and ensure the issue is resolved.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous snow and ice management or snow removal experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating subcontractors, employees, operators, or field crews.
  • Strong understanding of snow and ice operations.
  • Ability to evaluate whether a property is being serviced according to expectations.
  • Familiarity with snow removal equipment and common operational issues.
  • Basic mechanical and equipment troubleshooting knowledge preferred.
  • The ability to safely operate snow removal equipment is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers, subcontractors, operators, and branch leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation.
  • Comfortable using a smartphone for photographs, communication, documentation, and company applications.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during long-duration and high-pressure weather events.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in winter weather conditions.
  • Ability to work extended and irregular hours, including overnight, weekends, and holidays.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a field leader who takes ownership of their zone.

A successful Zone Manager understands that their primary responsibility is not to personally perform every task. Their responsibility is to ensure the operation is being performed correctly.

The right person:

  • Takes ownership of their assigned properties.
  • Notices details others may overlook.
  • Understands snow and ice operations.
  • Can evaluate the quality of snow removal and ice management services.
  • Communicates concerns before they become larger problems.
  • Can professionally manage and hold subcontractors accountable.
  • Understands equipment well enough to recognize and communicate common problems.
  • Is willing to address a minor issue when doing so makes operational sense.
  • Understands the importance of photographs and documentation.
  • Can prioritize multiple properties and problems at the same time.
  • Knows when to solve an issue independently and when to escalate it to the branch.
  • Remains calm and professional during difficult storm conditions.
  • Keeps the branch informed without requiring constant direction.
