Position Overview
GPS-based technology company is seeking a Software Developer (full-time position) to join our development team.
The Software Developer is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and improving the company's software applications, including data services, integrations, possibly some APIs and supporting infrastructure.
The role works closely with Product Management, Support, QA, Engineering, and other technical resources to translate product requirements and development stories into reliable, maintainable software.
The position will primarily involve development using Node.js, PHP, and MySQL, with opportunities to work with additional technologies and data platforms. Experience with ClickHouse is beneficial but not required.
The Software Developer will participate throughout the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, development, testing, debugging, deployment, documentation, and ongoing maintenance.
The position requires a combination of software-development, database, API, troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Primary ResponsibilitiesSoftware Application Development
- Provide technical input and estimates or assessments of development complexity and effort when requested.
- Communicate technical limitations, alternatives, and opportunities to Product Management.
- Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, demos, and retrospectives.
- Follow established development standards, coding practices, and source-control procedure.
- Write clean, maintainable, efficient, and well-structured code.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance web-based software applications and services.
- Develop new functionality based on product requirements, development stories, and technical specifications.
- Identify opportunities to improve application performance, reliability, usability, and maintainability.
- Participate in architectural and technical discussions regarding application design and implementation.
- Develop scalable solutions, appropriate for the volume and complexity of the company's GPS and vehicle data.
Backend Development
- Develop backend services and application functionality using Node.js and PHP.
- Build and maintain server-side business logic and application services.
- Develop and maintain REST APIs and web services.
- Implement data processing, business rules, validation, authentication, and error handling.
- Integrate applications with internal and third-party services.
- Troubleshoot and resolve backend application issues.
- Identify and address performance, reliability, and scalability issues.
Database Development & Data Management
- Design, develop, maintain and optimize MySQL databases, queries, stored procedures, and other database functionality using MySQL.
- Write complex, efficient SQL queries for application functionality, reporting, data processing, data analysis, troubleshooting, and operational support.
- Identify inefficient queries, missing or ineffective indexes, unnecessary table scans, excessive joins, and other database performance issues and implement appropriate solutions.
- Analyze and optimize SQL queries using EXPLAIN, execution plans, indexes, query statistics, and other database-performance tools.
- Design and modify database tables, columns, primary keys, foreign keys, indexes, relationships, constraints, and other database structures.
- Develop database solutions capable of efficiently handling large volumes of GPS and telematics data, including high-frequency location, event, trip, device, and historical data.
- Troubleshoot incorrect, missing, duplicate, or unexpected data by tracing data through the application, APIs, processing services, and underlying database tables
- Determine the root cause of data problems, rather than simply correcting individual records or applying temporary workarounds.
- Assist with database migrations, schema changes, data transformations, table restructuring, and large-scale data updates.
- Maintain awareness of data dependencies and the potential impact of database changes on APIs, applications, reports, integrations, customer-facing functionality, overall application performance and scalability.
- Work with other data technologies as appropriate, including ClickHouse, as the company's data platform evolves.
GPS, Telematics & Data Platform
- Understand GPS data elements including latitude/longitude, speed, heading, altitude, timestamps, distance, trip information, and vehicle/device status.
- Understand the flow of GPS data from devices through communications networks, ingestion services, databases, APIs, and applications.
- Work with vehicle tracking, fleet data, telematics, mapping, geofencing, routing, and location-based services.
- Troubleshoot issues involving GPS data processing, ingestion, storage, APIs, and application presentation.
- Develop solutions that account for the volume, frequency, and historical nature of GPS and telematics data.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies and strong software development skills.
- Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily communication, demos, and retrospectives.
- Professional experience with Node.js , PHP and MySQL

- Strong understanding of databases, data structures, relationships, indexing, and query optimization.
- Experience with source-control systems and software-development workflows.
- Experience debugging and troubleshooting production software.
- Ability to identify the root cause of technical problems rather than simply addressing symptoms.
- Familiarity with Jira and Slack for managing development work and communication.
- Understanding of REST APIs and web services.
Testing, Quality Assurance & Production Support
- Perform unit testing and developer-level testing of completed work.
- Work with QA to identify appropriate test scenarios and edge cases.
- Verify that completed development work satisfies the defined requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Analyze application logs, database records, API responses, and other available diagnostic information.
- Investigate and resolve software defects and technical issues within the appropriate development process, providing technical information, potential solutions, and status updates.
- Identify recurring problems and recommend permanent solutions rather than repeated workarounds.
API & Integration Development
- Implement integrations with third-party systems, data providers, and customer systems.
- Analyze data flows between external systems, APIs, databases, and applications.
- Use tools such as Postman to test, troubleshoot, and validate APIs.
GPS & Telematics Knowledge
- Understanding of GPS data elements including latitude/longitude, speed, heading, altitude, timestamps, distance, trip information, and vehicle/device status.
