Position Overview
OPTO International is seeking a Software Development Intern to support our software development team with application maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and small enhancements. Working under the direction of experienced developers and IT management, the intern will gain hands-on experience in an established .NET environment and learn how business needs are translated into reliable software solutions.
This internship is well suited for a student or early-career candidate interested in investigating technical issues, working with existing code, and gaining practical experience with .NET applications, relational databases, APIs, and software development processes. The assignment is expected to last approximately six months; however, the anticipated end date may be adjusted based on business needs, project timelines, funding, performance, and continued internship eligibility. An extension or future regular employment may be considered but is not guaranteed.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with reproducing, documenting, and troubleshooting reported application issues under developer supervision.
- Complete assigned bug fixes and small enhancement requests in .NET applications, with technical guidance and code review.
- Read and trace existing code to help identify probable causes of defects and escalate complex or unclear issues promptly.
- Write and update SQL queries for approved development and troubleshooting tasks involving relational databases.
- Support the maintenance and testing of APIs, web services, and system integrations.
- Prepare clear ticket notes, reproduction steps, test results, and technical documentation.
- Test completed changes and verify that fixes meet documented requirements before release.
- Participate in code reviews, team discussions, and learning sessions; apply feedback from senior developers.
- Work with developers and, when appropriate, business users to clarify workflows, reported issues, and expected results.
- Assist with approved ERP implementation activities, including testing, documentation, data validation, and support for integration or migration tasks.
- Follow company standards for source control, information security, change management, and software quality.
- Identify recurring issues or process improvement opportunities and bring them to the supervising manager or developer.
- Perform other related software development support duties consistent with the intern's training and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree, certificate, bootcamp, or comparable training in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Foundational understanding of object-oriented programming and software development concepts.
- Academic, personal-project, internship, or early professional experience with programming, debugging, or application development.
- Basic experience with relational databases and SQL.
- Ability to analyze a problem, ask thoughtful questions, document findings, and follow established technical guidance.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical team members.
- Dependability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn within an existing production environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or project experience with C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET, or another .NET technology.
- Exposure to PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, REST APIs, or web services.
- Experience using Git or another source-control platform.
- Familiarity with a ticketing system such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
- Exposure to automated testing, CI/CD, software design patterns, Domain-Driven Design, ERP systems, or legacy application modernization.
What You Will Gain
- Practical experience troubleshooting and improving business applications in a production environment.
- Mentorship and structured feedback from experienced developers and IT leadership.
- Exposure to the full ticket lifecycle, including issue clarification, development, testing, documentation, review, and verification.
- Opportunities to build experience with .NET, SQL, APIs, integrations, ERP-related work, and professional development practices.
