Software Engineer — AI & Agentic Systems

Codehaus is an Australian software engineering consultancy delivering complex solutions across Defence, Government, and Industry.

We’re looking for a software engineer with hands-on experience building AI-powered applications, integrating large language models, and developing agentic workflows. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and domain experts to turn emerging AI capabilities into practical software.

What You’ll Do

• Design and build software that integrates LLMs, tools, APIs, and data sources.
• Develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic workflows.
• Build prototypes, evaluate their effectiveness, and develop them into reliable capabilities.
• Contribute to software design, testing, integration, and deployment.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong software engineering skills, with proficiency in Python and experience with other languages welcomed.
• Practical experience integrating LLMs into applications, including tool calling, structured outputs, and context management.
• Experience building RAG systems or agentic workflows.
• Sound engineering practices, including testing, version control, Linux, and Docker.
• Curiosity, ownership, and the ability to work through unfamiliar technical problems.

We’re interested in AI systems you’ve built and evaluated . Using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or Codex alone isn’t sufficient for this role.

Experience with open-weight models, local inference, fine-tuning, data engineering, or machine learning would be highly regarded.

Security Requirements

Australian citizenship and a current Australian Government Security Clearance, or eligibility for reinstatement of a previously held clearance, are required.
