Software Engineer

Ever wanted to build software that does more than sit in the cloud?

I'm working with an established, employee-owned engineering and manufacturing business that's investing in modernizing the software behind its industrial machinery.

They're looking for a Software Engineer who enjoys building modern applications but also understands how software interacts with physical equipment, real-time data and industrial systems.

This isn't a traditional PLC or controls engineering position.

The focus is on modern software engineering, intuitive user interfaces and building reliable applications that operate alongside real machinery.

The opportunity

You'll join a small engineering team working on the next generation of software for industrial manufacturing equipment.

A major focus is modernizing existing HMI/operator interfaces, replacing outdated approaches with intuitive, modern applications that make complex machinery easier to operate.

You'll also contribute to a preventative-maintenance and machine-monitoring platform, helping customers better understand equipment performance, identify issues and improve reliability.

The software needs to work in real-world production environments, where reliability matters and downtime has genuine consequences.

What you'll be doing

• Building modern operator interfaces and applications using React and TypeScript
• Developing backend services and APIs using technologies such as Node.js, Python and C++
• Working with real-time machine data, telemetry and equipment monitoring
• Integrating software with PLCs and industrial equipment
• Improving the usability of complex industrial systems
• Developing reliable applications for edge/on-premise environments
• Contributing to software architecture, testing, deployment and engineering best practices
• Helping shape the technical direction of new software products

What we're looking for

You'll ideally have:

• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript development experience
• Experience building applications with React
• Backend development experience with Node.js, Python or similar
• An understanding of APIs, databases and software architecture
• Experience building and supporting production software
• An interest in software that interacts with physical systems

Experience in any of the following would be particularly interesting:

• Industrial automation, manufacturing or robotics
• HMI / SCADA / operator interfaces
• PLC-connected software
• OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus or other industrial communication protocols
• Industrial IoT, edge computing or embedded-connected applications
• Real-time monitoring, telemetry or machine-control software

You don't need to have worked with every technology listed.

We're particularly interested in software engineers who've worked around industrial systems , rather than traditional controls engineers who have only occasionally written application code.
