What they need

Our client is an innovative MedTech scale-up based in Utrecht, with a team of over 90 professionals working on technology that could transform the way blood samples are collected.

The company is developing a fully autonomous robotic system capable of performing diagnostic blood draws without the need for a phlebotomist. By combining near-infrared imaging, ultrasound, Doppler technology, advanced robotics and AI, the system can identify veins and collect blood samples autonomously.

Having successfully transitioned from product development to its first customer deployments, the company is entering an exciting new phase!

The focus is now on enhancing reliability, scalability and long-term maintainability as the technology moves into real-world clinical environments.

To support this next stage of growth, we are looking for a C++ Software Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team of software, hardware and systems engineers.

The Role

As a C++ Software Engineer, you'll play a key role in developing and improving the software behind a sophisticated, hardware-integrated robotic system.

You'll take ownership of critical software components, working primarily with modern C++ (C++17/20) in a Linux environment. Rather than traditional embedded firmware development, you'll be building software that runs on the PC integrated into the robotic platform.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing and maintaining robust, high-quality C++ software components.
  • Working with state-machine-based architectures to manage complex system behaviour.
  • Integrating evolving hardware components into the existing software ecosystem.
  • Developing and maintaining communication between subsystems using DDS (Data Distribution Service).
  • Troubleshooting complex challenges at the intersection of hardware and software.
  • Improving software architecture, maintainability, performance and scalability.
  • Strengthening automated testing and verification processes, including the use of Python scripting.
  • Optimising software performance in Linux and real-time environments.
  • Contributing to code reviews, architectural decisions and system-level technical discussions.

You'll be joining an engineering environment where technical expertise is valued, collaboration is encouraged and engineers have a genuine voice in shaping the product.

What you'll bring:

  • 4–7 years of professional experience in C++ software development.
  • Strong knowledge of modern C++ (C++17/20), with experience developing production-grade software.
  • A solid understanding of software architecture, maintainability, scalability and automated testing.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux and debugging complex software systems.
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • A Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • We're looking for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, takes pride in writing clean and maintainable code, and thrives in a multidisciplinary environment.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with state machines and hardware-software integration.
  • Knowledge of DDS or similar publish/subscribe communication frameworks.
  • Exposure to real-time systems.
  • Experience with Python scripting and test automation.
  • Previous experience in robotics, medical devices or other complex hardware-driven environments.

What's in It for You?

Beyond the opportunity to work on meaningful technology with real-world impact, you'll benefit from:

  • Salary: Up to €72,000 gross annually, including pension.
  • Hybrid working: A flexible working arrangement based around the Utrecht office.
  • Time off: 25 days of annual leave on a full-time contract.
  • Professional development: An annual training budget of €2,000.
  • Team culture: Regular social activities and an annual company weekend away.
  • Technical ownership: The opportunity to influence architectural decisions and contribute directly to a complex, innovative product.

Interested?

If you're passionate about modern C++, enjoy working close to hardware and want to contribute to technology that could make a meaningful difference in healthcare, we'd love to hear from you.
