What they need

Company overview

  • Wyser is a dynamic and innovative digital transformation company that helps organisations improve their efficiency and productivity through the use of responsible AI
  • Wyser designs, builds and operates production AI systems for regulated and frontline services, where getting things right matters more than getting them out fast
  • Wyser is seeking a Software Engineer to help build and run the platform, services and tooling that put our AI systems into production

About the role

We're looking for a well-rounded engineer who wants to grow into a strong platform and backend engineer.

We care more about how you think than what you already know. We invest properly in the people who join us, and we're looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, questions assumptions and holds themselves to a high standard of quality.

You'll work across our Python services, cloud infrastructure and deployment tooling, alongside our ML engineers and product team.

Job responsibilities

  • Build, test and maintain Python services and APIs that sit around our AI systems
  • Help develop and operate our cloud platform: container apps, SQL databases, Redis, queues, storage and monitoring
  • Contribute to our customer-facing applications, built as progressive web apps and desktop apps with Tauri, with a focus on the backend services and APIs that power them.
  • Write tests and review code (your own and others') with a critical eye, catching problems before they reach production
  • Investigate and fix bugs and production issues, getting to the root cause rather than patching symptoms
  • Improve our deployment pipelines, developer tooling and documentation
  • Work with ML engineers and product colleagues to turn requirements into reliable, maintainable software

Who we're looking for

These matter more to us than any item on the skills list:

  • A quality mindset. You don't consider something done because it runs. You test it, think about edge cases and failure modes, and you'd rather ship late than ship something you don't trust.
  • Critical thinking. You ask why. You question requirements, your own assumptions and the output of your tools, and you can explain the trade-offs behind your decisions.
  • Ownership. You understand the code you submit and can defend it. AI coding tools are welcome here and we use them, but as an aid to your thinking, not a substitute for it. If you can't explain it, it isn't ready
  • Problem solving. When you're stuck, you break the problem down, investigate methodically and know when to ask for help
  • Curiosity and drive to learn. You want to understand how things work under the hood, and you're keen to be stretched

Desired skillset

Essential

  • Working knowledge of Python, from study, personal projects or professional work.
  • A genuine interest in cloud and platform engineering.
  • An understanding of what containers (e.g. Docker) and serverless computing are, and why and when you'd use each.
  • Familiarity with Git and some experience writing tests.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.

Nice to have

  • FastAPI or another Python web framework
  • Experience with a database, relational (e.g. PostgreSQL, SQL Server) or otherwise
  • An interest in systems programming languages such as Rust or Go
  • Exposure to a cloud provider, ideally Azure
  • Any experience with CI/CD or infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform)
  • Some familiarity with JavaScript or Svelte

Required experience

A minimum of one year of experience. This role suits a graduate, someone with up to two years in industry, or a self-taught or career-changing engineer. We want to see evidence that you build things and care about doing them well: a degree project, open-source contributions, a personal project, or work you've shipped.

Why join Wyser?

At Wyser, you'll work in a fast-paced, innovative environment where your contributions directly impact our success. You'll be given real responsibility and the support to grow with it.

We offer competitive compensation, flexible working arrangements, and the chance to be part of a talented and supportive team.

You must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.

Other offers great for you!
