My client is Series D maritime defense company backed by over $325m in funding from top tier investors with a relentless passion for performance. Built to operate in the world’s harshest environments, their autonomous systems deliver payload effects and persistent, wide-area intelligence, enabling informed decisions across the spectrum of defense missions.
Harnessing AI, advanced sensor suites, and renewable power for unmatched endurance at sea, the company delivers superior multi-domain impact—from power projection to persistent ISR to real-time threat detection and tracking—while reducing cost and risk. With proven operational success across the world’s oceans, they is advancing the frontier of autonomous maritime operations to give decision-makers and warfighters the enduring advantage to outpace adversaries today and build tomorrow’s most decisive capabilities.
What we're looking for
We need a backend-leaning engineer with about 4–8 years of experience building and running production cloud and distributed systems. You must be strong in both Python and TypeScript, not just one of them. You should be comfortable working in an existing legacy codebase, debugging and making changes across several repos without much hand-holding. You should also have a track record of owning production services and APIs from design through deployment and operation, ideally on AWS. Bonus points if you've worked with real-time or streaming data, or with telemetry, sensor or geospatial data from robotics, autonomous vehicles, IoT, aerospace or defense systems.
This is a mid-level role on a new Fleet Engineering team. It is called full stack, but about 80–90% of the work is platform and APIs. The front end is a small part of the job. More senior engineers with the right hands-on skills are also welcome.
Requirements:
- Experience building, deploying, and operating production cloud or distributed systems; backend- leaning software engineer focused on platform APIs and distributed services
- Python and TypeScript proficiency
- Ability to work hybrid in Alameda, CA (3 days/week, no relocation support)
- Comfort working in the defense industry
- 4 - 8 years of experience as a cloud software engineer with strong a backend, infrastructure, and distributed systems background
- Experience debugging and modifying legacy codebases across multiple repositories; need a high- level of ownership to hit the ground running in this area and require little hand- holding
- Bachelor's degree in CS or other technical domain
- Experience with AWS (or another major cloud platform)
Nice-to-have
- Experience in streaming or real- time data, telemetry, sensor, or geospatial data, IoT or robotics, aerospace/defense, robotics, autonomous vehicles, IoT, or distributed
What you'll do
- Design, build and operate production cloud services that ingest, process, store and expose sensor, detection and operational data from a fleet of autonomous surface vessels (USVs)
- Take ownership of projects that span multiple repos in an existing codebase. You'll debug, refactor and improve that infrastructure as it scales, rather than starting new projects from scratch
- Work closely with the Fleet Engineering hiring manager and front-end-focused teammates to give downstream applications and mission operators the backend services and APIs they need
- Develop backend services and APIs in Python and TypeScript that connect vessels with intermittent connections to the applications used to monitor and operate them
- Lead the design of data models and database systems for operational and sensor-derived data, from early design through production rollout
- Deploy, monitor and debug services in AWS, improving reliability, scalability, observability and graceful handling of delayed or incomplete data
Why candidates should join
- Real Robots at Sea: You'll build the cloud services that connect autonomous vessels to the people who monitor and run them. Your code turns live sensor and detection data from across the world's oceans into info operators actually use.
- Hard Distributed Systems Problems: Vessels drop in and out of connection mid-ocean. You'll design for delayed and incomplete data and graceful failure. Most cloud work never deals with that.
- Real Ownership on a New Team: You'll join a brand-new fleet engineering team. You'll carry projects across multiple repos and own them end to end in Python and TypeScript on AWS.
- Strong Pay: Base runs $200K to $300K plus equity. builds equity grants into core comp.
- Hybrid in the Bay Area: You'll work from the Alameda office three days a week.
