Position Summary
We are seeking a Software Engineer II to support and enhance a mix of legacy and modern applications used across customer support and internal operations. This is a backend and platform-leaning role, with the majority of the work focused on C#/.NET, SQL Server, services, integrations, authentication, and application infrastructure. While the focus is backend, this is not a backend-only role. Engineers on this team follow problems wherever they lead, which may occasionally include legacy WebForms pages, WordPress integrations, or support-facing UI.
Our engineering teams also make significant use of AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding workflows. This role will use AI as part of the development process while remaining accountable for the quality, security, maintainability, and production readiness of the work.
What You’ll Do
- Develop, maintain, and enhance primarily backend applications and services using C#/.NET and SQL Server.
- Troubleshoot production issues across application code, databases, authentication, configuration, logging, integrations, and deployment environments.
- Work with both modern and legacy .NET systems and make safe, focused improvements to existing applications.
- Contribute to the incremental modernization of legacy systems, including authentication, deployment, observability, and operational improvements.
- Work across services, databases, integrations, and support-facing applications when problems cross system boundaries.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, troubleshooting guides, and investigation notes.
- Collaborate with Product, IT, Help Desk, Customer Success, and other teams to resolve technical issues.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools for development, code analysis, testing, debugging, and documentation, while critically evaluating AI-generated output before it is used in production.
Qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience with C# and .NET application development.
- Strong SQL Server skills, including stored procedures and data-driven troubleshooting.
- Experience developing and troubleshooting backend applications, services, and integrations.
- Ability to understand unfamiliar or legacy code and make safe, focused changes.
- Experience diagnosing production issues using application logs, database analysis, and other operational data.
- AI development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor
- Familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts such as OIDC, claims, roles, sessions, or platforms such as Okta.
- Experience with source control, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and software deployment practices.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools or a strong willingness to incorporate them into day-to-day engineering workflows.
- Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical partners.
Nice to Have:
Experience with VB.NET, IIS, Windows services, Vue/TypeScript, WordPress integrations, & AWS services.
TaxAct is a leading digital tax filing platform which offers customers do-it-yourself digital and downloadable products that are easy-to-use, best-in-class technology, and provide unparalleled customer support. We are a trusted solution for all users including those with complex tax returns. We strive to attract and retain candidates who exemplify our values: performance, perseverance, progress and partnership. TaxAct is a member of the Taxwell family of products. We are an organization of forward thinkers looking to add industry experts to our growing team.
This role will primarily support TaxAct as the organization helps everyday Americans file their taxes. We seek to build a team of experts in tax and technology who are customer advocates and have the mindset to reimagine the services our customers receive.
This role is ideal for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who is comfortable taking ownership of complex features, solving challenging technical problems, and working across both mature and evolving systems. You’ll design and deliver features, troubleshoot difficult issues, refactor existing applications, and contribute to technical design and delivery decisions.
The work spans several technologies, with the current mix approximately 40% .NET, 30% Vue, 20% C++, and 10% Angular. We value engineers who think critically, ask good questions, and take pride in building high-quality software. AI-assisted development is a growing part of our workflow, and you’ll be expected to use tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar tools to increase velocity while maintaining high standards
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and test frontend and backend features across our tax filing systems
- Debug and resolve application issues, improving performance and reliability
- Participate in design and code reviews, offering and receiving constructive feedback
- Collaborate with product, design, and QA to scope and deliver reliable features on time
- Write testable, production-quality code, leveraging AI tools when appropriate to accelerate development, explore options, or improve documentation
- Contribute to maintainability not just in your own work, but in how the system fits together overall
- Build a deep understanding of the tax filing domain, system architecture, and codebase in order to contribute thoughtfully, challenge assumptions, propose improvements, and grow your design instincts over time
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong experience developing applications with .NET
- Experience with Vue and/or Angular
- Exposure to C++ is helpful but not required. This role includes maintenance of existing C++ applications, so candidates should be comfortable learning and working with C++ as needed
- Familiarity with Microsoft development tools and workflows such as Visual Studio, SQL Server, and Azure DevOps
- Experience building, debugging, and maintaining production systems
- Ability to independently break down complex problems, evaluate solutions, and drive work through completion
- Experience contributing to technical design discussions and code reviews
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar tools, and a willingness to continue developing that skill
Bonus Skills
- Experience with AWS (preferred), or other cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP
- Experience working in Agile or Scrum-based teams
- Experience in highly regulated domains such as tax, fintech, or healthcare
