Software Engineering Intern

Surlamer Investments is a Newport Beach-based private investment firm with a portfolio spanning algorithmic hedge funds, public markets, and technology-based private ventures. We have internally developed a FinTech startup focused on a pre-launch trading ideation and research platform empowered by AI, large language models (LLMs), and proprietary algorithms.

This is a hands-on software engineering internship focused on enhancing the existing platform. Interns will contribute across frontend and UI/UX, backend systems, APIs, financial data integrations, and platform performance.

We are seeking resourceful candidates with strong full-stack engineering skills who are comfortable working across multiple areas of the product. Exposure to trading, investment research, and fundamental financial analysis is preferred. Candidates without direct exposure should have a strong interest in financial markets and be quick learners who can rapidly develop the knowledge needed to contribute effectively.

We are hiring immediately and looking for candidates who can start as soon as possible. Strong performance may lead to a full-time opportunity.

Internship Details

• Pay: $35 per hour
• Start: Immediate | As soon as possible
• Length: 10 weeks, with potential for a future full-time offer
• Time Commitment: 40+ hours per week
• Location: Fully on-site in Newport Beach, CA. No remote or hybrid work. Candidates must be within commutable distance or willing to relocate for the duration of the internship.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the continued development and enhancement of a pre-launch trading ideation and research platform
• Build and improve features across the core codebase, with particular focus on UI/UX and platform functionality
• Enhance APIs, backend services, and infrastructure for performance, scalability, and reliability
• Build and maintain data pipelines and integrations with external financial data sources
• Analyze system performance and user workflows to identify and implement meaningful improvements
• Debug complex issues and improve code quality, stability, and execution speed
• Support cloud infrastructure and deployment workflows, including AWS, Terraform, and CI/CD

Qualifications

• Must be available to start as soon as possible
• Must be available to work 40+ hours per week, fully on-site in Newport Beach, CA, during business hours
• Bachelor’s degree completed, or expected by December 2026, in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, or a related field
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future
• Strong Python and JavaScript skills, with the ability to read, understand, and improve an existing codebase
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including algorithms, APIs, backend systems, and system design
• Experience debugging and improving existing applications and integrating external APIs or data sources
• Frontend, UI/UX, or full-stack development experience strongly preferred
• Knowledge of or personal experience with trading, financial data, or investment technology preferred
• Exposure to stock trading, investment research, and fundamental financial analysis preferred
