What they need
Engineering Manager
Location: Midvale, UT (Hybrid)
Compensation: $120k - $140k DOE
Overview:
We make printers do big things. Onyx Graphics, a Canon subsidiary, builds the software behind industrial printers that turn out vehicle wraps, building-sized signs, textiles, packaging prototypes, and fine art reproductions. If it's large, colorful, and has to be exactly right, we're probably involved.
That's where you come in. We're looking for an Engineering Manager who still loves to build and who also wants to help a team grow. You'll lead our engineers, keep our AI-first development honest, and spend part of your week in the code. Our cloud products are still being built, and some of our systems have been running for years, so there's always something to design, fix, or improve. We're based in Midvale, Utah, and the team is small enough that your work won't disappear into a giant org chart. You'll see it in the product, and maybe on a billboard.
Why This Role Exists:
Our engineering team is evolving. As our organization continues to grow, we recognize the need for a dedicated Engineering Manager to oversee the team's day-to-day technical operations, support its continued development, and ensure engineering excellence. This role will allow our Director to focus on broader strategic initiatives and portfolio management.
We're investing in stronger technical leadership. We're looking for an experienced engineering leader who can mentor and develop our team, strengthen technical capabilities, and empower engineers to make informed, high-impact technical decisions. Building a team of confident, independent technical leaders is a key priority for this position.
We're embracing AI-first development. Artificial intelligence is an integral part of our software development process, with AI agents contributing significantly to our codebase. We're seeking an experienced engineering professional who understands how to leverage AI effectively while maintaining rigorous engineering standards, ensuring code quality, and implementing meaningful testing practices that deliver reliable, scalable solutions.
What You'll Do:
Lead and Develop Your Team
- Lead, mentor, and develop our two Team Leads while providing direct technical coaching to engineers through hands-on collaboration, AI adoption, and code and test reviews.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for shared specialists in architecture, cloud infrastructure, and design. Establish priorities, define project scope, and ensure deliverables meet established expectations.
- Empower engineers and Team Leads to make independent technical decisions within established guidelines, fostering accountability, professional growth, and ownership.
Drive Technical Excellence
- Actively participate in major architectural decisions, bringing hands-on engineering expertise while ensuring decisions are documented, supported by clear reasoning, and assigned to accountable owners.
- Establish and oversee code review standards, particularly for critical systems and high-risk changes. Determine where human review is essential while eliminating unnecessary approval processes.
- Evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of automated testing through mutation testing, test regeneration, and other validation techniques to ensure tests identify meaningful defects.
- Develop and maintain engineering standards for AI-assisted development, establishing consistent expectations for code quality, testing, and technical accountability regardless of the AI tools utilized.
Contribute Hands-On Engineering Expertise
- Design, develop, and improve engineering systems, internal tools, testing infrastructure, and reference implementations that enhance engineering efficiency and technical capabilities.
- Lead technical investigations and develop practical solutions that inform significant architectural and engineering decisions.
- Take ownership of particularly complex technical challenges, including persistent defects requiring advanced troubleshooting and engineering expertise.
Ensure Production Reliability and Operational Accountability
- Maintain visibility into engineering delivery, ensuring project status accurately reflects progress, technical challenges, and potential risks.
- Proactively identify engineering risks and present actionable recommendations and solutions.
- Participate in production release approvals, lead incident response efforts, and ensure significant production incidents undergo thorough, blameless root cause analysis.
- Establish accountability for corrective actions, ensuring identified improvements are implemented and verified.
What You'll Bring:
Senior-Level Engineering Expertise - Demonstrated experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining complex systems in production environments. You can confidently navigate unfamiliar codebases, independently evaluate architectural proposals, and assess the reliability and effectiveness of automated testing strategies.
Recent Hands-On Technical Experience - A strong background in hands-on software engineering, including recent and meaningful technical contributions. This is an active technical leadership position requiring someone who is committed to remaining directly involved in engineering work.
Technical Leadership and People Development - Experience leading and mentoring engineers as a Technical Lead, Team Lead, Engineering Manager, or in a comparable leadership position. You have demonstrated success improving engineering practices, developing technical capabilities, and helping engineers advance professionally.
Advanced Testing and Quality Assurance - Extensive experience developing and evaluating automated testing strategies, including a strong understanding of the capabilities and limitations of code coverage. Familiarity with mutation testing or comparable techniques for validating test effectiveness is essential.
Production Operations and Incident Management - Practical experience supporting production environments, including observability, monitoring, alerting, incident response, and root cause analysis. You understand how to identify underlying technical issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.
AI-Assisted Software Development - Direct, hands-on experience utilizing AI-assisted or AI-first development methodologies. You understand how to integrate AI into engineering workflows while maintaining technical oversight, code quality, and reliable testing practices.
Technical Tools and Infrastructure - Strong working knowledge of Git, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), automated testing, cloud infrastructure, and infrastructure as code.
Communication and Collaboration - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts, document engineering decisions, and collaborate effectively across multinational and multilingual teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the core qualifications outlined above, the ideal candidate will bring one or more of the following:
- Engineering Leadership Development: Experience mentoring and developing Team Leads or first-line Engineering Managers, with a demonstrated ability to strengthen technical leadership and build high-performing teams.
- Programming Language Expertise: Advanced proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: TypeScript, Rust, or C++.
- Industry-Specific Experience: Experience developing software solutions for industrial, manufacturing, device-integrated, or production-printing environments.
- Commercial Software Systems: Experience designing, developing, or maintaining licensing, entitlement management, subscription, e-commerce, or payment processing systems.
Work Environment (Office / Hybrid Work Arrangement):
This position operates in a professional office environment, with hybrid and remote work arrangements available subject to management approval and business needs.
The role requires regular use of standard office equipment and business software, including Microsoft Office Suite, ClickUp, Claude Code, cloud provider consoles, and other engineering tools and platforms.
The position involves extended computer and mobile-device use, availability or rotation to support designated production systems, and occasional work in the company's test lab to validate software connectivity and integration with physical devices.
Employees are expected to maintain a safe and ergonomic workspace, whether working on-site or remotely, and comply with all applicable company policies regarding workplace safety, cybersecurity, data privacy, and confidentiality.
Benefits:

Paid Time Off
