Software Technical Lead

Are you a senior software engineer who has moved into technical leadership without losing your hands-on edge?

We’re looking for an experienced Software Technical Lead to join a leading New Zealand technology consultancy, working across a range of complex client engagements.

This is not a traditional Team Leader or people-management role. You’ll be a senior technical practitioner who can lead from the front, work directly with customers, solve difficult problems and bring the right technical approach to projects from design through to delivery.

What you’ll be doing You’ll move across different engagements, helping teams and clients solve challenging technical problems and providing technical direction where it matters most.

You’ll be expected to:

• Lead technical direction across software development engagements
• Remain hands-on and jump into development when required
• Work directly with customers and senior stakeholders
• Translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical recommendations
• Contribute to pre-sales, solution design and technical discovery
• Help establish architecture, development standards and best practices
• Lead and support software development squads from a technical perspective
• Identify and resolve technical blockers and delivery challenges
• Develop and improve CI/CD pipelines, automation and engineering practices
• Champion the pragmatic adoption of modern development tools, including AI-assisted development
• Step into complex client situations and take ownership of getting things moving

What we’re looking for You’ll be an experienced software developer first and foremost, with the communication skills and technical maturity to operate at a senior consulting level.

You’ll ideally bring:

• 10+ years’ commercial software development experience
• Deep, hands-on experience with C# and .NET
• Strong experience with Angular and JavaScript/TypeScript
• Experience with Flutter, React Native
• Strong understanding of modern software architecture and development practices
• Experience leading technical delivery or software development squads
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Confidence working directly with customers and senior stakeholders
• Experience contributing to pre-sales, consulting or technical discovery
• A track record of adopting or championing AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code

This role will suit someone who enjoys variety and thrives when they’re given a difficult technical problem and asked, “go and sort this out.”

You’ll need to be comfortable working independently, engaging with customers, challenging assumptions and making pragmatic technical decisions.

Most importantly, you’ll still be close enough to the code to get stuck in when required. This isn’t a role for someone who has moved completely away from hands-on development.You’ll bring the technical depth of a senior engineer, the communication skills of a consultant and the leadership capability to take technical ownership when it counts.
