What they need

Solar Design Engineer (Part-Time)

Renewable America LLC

Location: Fully Remote

Term: Part-time, with a path to full-time for a strong performer

About Renewable America:

Renewable America is a solar and storage developer focused on delivering local, small utility-scale, and community microgrid projects across California. Our projects provide reliable, dispatchable clean energy and improve local resiliency by supplying emergency power during grid outages. With over 199 MWdc of solar and 465 MWh of storage in development, we work to maximize community and environmental benefits while minimizing land impacts.

We offer comprehensive services spanning engineering, financing, construction, and operations. Our mission is to support communities through economic development and equitable access to renewable energy.

Position Summary:

Renewable America is hiring a part-time Solar Design Engineer to carry the design and energy modeling work behind our California solar and storage projects. The role is hands-on engineering first, and it also carries real project management responsibility. You will produce the PV layouts, single-line diagram markups, and production models our development team and our licensed electrical engineer build on, size storage systems, and assemble bills of material. Alongside that work you will own the design schedule and deliverables across active projects and run our commercial and industrial projects end to end. The role is fully remote and part-time, and for a strong performer it is a path to a full-time position with broader development responsibility.

Responsibilities:

·        PV Layouts: Prepare and revise preliminary site layouts in AutoCAD, from early feasibility through 30 percent design, and iterate as site constraints change.

·        Single-Line Diagrams: Produce and mark up SLDs that our licensed electrical engineer stamps into issued-for-permit and issued-for-construction sets, and incorporate their redlines.

·        Energy Production Modeling: Build PVsyst models and hourly 8760 production profiles, and analyze results against project assumptions.

·        Storage Sizing: Size battery energy storage systems to project load, tariff, and dispatch requirements, and document the basis for each sizing.

·        Bills of Material: Assemble and maintain equipment bills of material covering modules, inverters, racking, storage, and balance of system.

·        Design Schedule and Deliverables: Own the design schedule across active projects, track what is due and when, coordinate the inputs each deliverable depends on, and raise schedule risk to the development lead early enough to act on it.

·        Commercial and Industrial Project Management: Run C&I projects end to end, from requesting and reviewing customer utility energy usage data, through savings and tariff analysis in Energy Toolbase, to the finished package, with the project lead reviewing rather than driving.

·        Client-Facing Materials: Build PowerPoint summaries of design and economic findings for the project lead to present.

·        Design Documentation: Keep drawing files, model runs, and equipment assumptions organized and versioned so any project can be picked up mid-stream.

Qualifications:

·        Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a closely related field.

·        One to three years of hands-on solar design or engineering experience.

·        Proficiency in AutoCAD and PVsyst, with the ability to take a layout from concept to a drawing an engineer of record can review.

·        Working knowledge of Energy Toolbase or a comparable utility rate and storage analysis platform, and comfort working with interval energy usage data.

·        Understanding of how NEC requirements apply to PV and storage single-line diagrams.

·        Strong Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to produce clean, client-ready PowerPoint summaries.

·        Able to work independently in a fully remote, part-time capacity, manage several projects at once, and turn work around on a development schedule.

·        Demonstrated ability to hold your own schedule and deliverables, and to carry a project from intake through to a finished package with light oversight.

·        Clear written communication, including comfort documenting design assumptions for engineers and non-engineers alike.

Position Details:

·        Job Type: Part-time

·        Location: Fully remote

·        Hours: Flexible, set with the development team

·        Compensation: Up to $2,500 per month, commensurate with experience

·        Start Date: As soon as the candidate is available

·        Path to Full-Time: Strong performers are considered first as the role expands into broader development engineering work

Why Join Renewable America:

·        Work on real California projects, with over 199 MWdc of solar and 465 MWh of storage in development.

·        Own the design work end to end rather than drafting to someone else's spec.

·        Carry your own commercial and industrial projects rather than only supporting someone else's.

·        Direct access to the development team and to our licensed electrical engineer.

·        Fully remote and part-time, with a genuine path to full-time.
