Soldering Technician

The role

Solder and assemble electronic components, boards and wiring harnesses for our systems, to a consistent and inspectable quality standard.

Responsibilities

• Solder through-hole components, wire-to-board and wire-to-wire connections on PCBs, harnesses and connectors.
• Build wiring harnesses stripping, crimping, ferruling, connector pinning, heat-shrink, lacing and dressing.
• Handle, identify, verify and place electronic components correctly as per BOM and polarity markings.
• Inspect solder joints visually and under magnification; rework dry joints, bridges, cold joints and lifted pads.
• Carry out continuity and basic point-to-point checks on completed harnesses before handover.
• Work from drawings, wiring diagrams, BOMs and work instructions; flag discrepancies instead of improvising.
• Maintain ESD discipline, workbench housekeeping and tool upkeep (iron tips, station calibration).
• Maintain assembly records and batch traceability; report defects and repeat issues to the Production Lead.
• Support the Electronics Production Lead with assembly, testing and dispatch activities as needed.

Requirements

• ITI / Diploma in Electronics or Electrical, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• 13 years of hands-on soldering and electronic assembly experience.
• Clean, consistent through-hole soldering and desoldering; confident with wick and pump.
• Reads basic circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams and BOMs; identifies components and polarity correctly.
• Hands-on with temperature-controlled soldering station, hot air, crimping and stripping tools, multimeter for continuity.
• Understands and follows ESD handling precautions.
• Good near vision and colour discrimination for fine-pitch work and component colour codes.

Good to have

• SMD soldering and rework (0603 / 0402, SOIC, QFP) otherwise trained on the job.
• Awareness of IPC-A-610 / J-STD-001 workmanship standards.
• Experience in defence, aerospace, capital equipment or EMS/contract manufacturing.
• Basic multimeter-based fault finding beyond continuity.
• Basic computer literacy for logging assembly records.
