About the opportunity

Seeking an experienced Solution Engineer / Solution Architect to support business-as-usual (BAU) delivery across its technology environment, with a focus on regulatory reform, integration and secure solution design.

Working closely with business stakeholders, delivery teams and technology specialists, you will translate business and regulatory requirements into practical solutions that support ongoing operations. You will assess changes to existing systems, identify dependencies and guide delivery from initial analysis through to implementation.

This role suits someone who enjoys working within an established technology landscape, balancing immediate delivery needs with maintainability, security and broader architectural standards. Energy industry experience is mandatory , alongside the ability to understand how regulatory changes affect business processes, applications and integrations.

Key responsibilities

Solution architecture and design

• Develop end-to-end solution designs for BAU enhancements, regulatory changes and operational requirements.
• Translate business requirements into clear technical designs, identifying impacts across applications, integrations, data and infrastructure.
• Assess the current technology landscape and recommend solutions that work effectively within existing platforms and architectural standards.
• Define functional and non-functional requirements, including availability, performance, resilience, security and supportability.
• Present design options, explaining the costs, risks, dependencies and trade-offs to technical and business stakeholders.
• Create and maintain solution documentation, including architecture diagrams, interface specifications, design decisions and implementation considerations.

Energy regulatory reform

• Work with business and regulatory stakeholders to understand energy market reforms and their technology implications.
• Assess how regulatory requirements affect existing systems, business processes, data flows and external interfaces.
• Develop solution designs that support compliance obligations and required delivery timeframes.
• Identify cross-system dependencies and help delivery teams understand the scope and sequencing of required changes.
• Maintain traceability between regulatory requirements and proposed technical solutions.

Integration design

• Define how applications and platforms exchange information across the technology environment.
• Work with integration specialists to design interfaces using appropriate API, messaging, event-driven and batch integration patterns.
• Assess the capabilities and limitations of existing integration platforms when developing solutions.
• Address data mapping, validation, error handling, monitoring and recovery requirements within integration designs.
• Consider the downstream impact of interface changes on connected systems and operational teams.
• Promote reusable integration patterns that improve consistency and reduce ongoing maintenance.

Security by design

• Embed security requirements into solution design from the outset.
• Collaborate with security specialists to identify risks and incorporate appropriate controls.
• Consider identity and access management, least-privilege access, data protection, encryption and audit requirements.
• Ensure security considerations extend across application interfaces, integration platforms and third-party connections.
• Document security decisions, risks and any required remediation actions.

Delivery and operational support

• Provide technical guidance to engineers, testers, business analysts and delivery teams throughout implementation.
• Participate in design reviews and relevant architecture governance forums.
• Help resolve design questions, technical constraints and dependencies during delivery.
• Support testing, release planning and operational handover to ensure solutions are ready for production.
• Work with support teams to ensure monitoring, support documentation and recovery requirements are addressed.
• Identify opportunities to simplify existing solutions and reduce technical debt through ongoing BAU delivery.

Essential skills and experience

• Demonstrated experience within the energy industry , with an understanding of energy market processes, systems and regulatory obligations.
• Experience as a Solution Engineer, Solution Architect or in a comparable role with responsibility for end-to-end technical design.
• Proven experience translating energy regulatory reform requirements into technology solutions.
• Strong knowledge of integration platforms and enterprise integration patterns, including APIs, messaging, events and batch processing.
• Experience designing changes within complex, established technology environments.
• A practical understanding of security by design and the ability to incorporate security controls into solution architecture.
• Ability to assess impacts and dependencies across applications, integrations, data and business processes.
• Experience defining non-functional requirements and designing reliable, maintainable and supportable solutions.
• Strong documentation skills, with the ability to communicate technical designs clearly to different audiences.
• Confidence working with business stakeholders, engineers, security teams and external technology partners.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and provide pragmatic design guidance across multiple BAU deliverables.

Desirable experience

• Experience supporting technology transformation or modernisation initiatives.
• Experience with application, platform or data migrations, including transition planning and cutover considerations.
• Familiarity with hybrid environments spanning on-premises systems, cloud services and SaaS platforms.
• Experience improving integration patterns, simplifying application dependencies or reducing technical debt.
