Job Overview
Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning is seeking a passionate, skilled and adaptable Spanish Tutor to support children and young people at our Idle Centre and, where required, across West Yorkshire.
Our learners may have autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, EBSA, SEMH, trauma, sensory differences, speech and language needs or other barriers to accessing education. You will deliver personalised Spanish tuition that reflects each learner’s starting point, individual needs, interests and agreed outcomes.
The role may include supporting learners who are completely new to Spanish, developing conversational and practical language skills, or preparing learners for GCSE Spanish. You will help learners develop their confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing while creating positive and engaging experiences of learning another language.
We recognise that many of our learners have experienced disruption to education or may find traditional classroom approaches difficult to access. Teaching should therefore be flexible, creative and appropriately paced, enabling learners to experience success and make meaningful progress without unnecessary pressure.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging one-to-one and small-group Spanish tuition
- Plan personalised learning based on each learner’s starting point, needs, interests and agreed outcomes
- Teach Spanish across appropriate primary, secondary and GCSE-level content
- Develop learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
- Support the development of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and conversational Spanish
- Prepare learners for GCSE Spanish examinations and assessments where required
- Adapt teaching for learners with SEND, dyslexia, anxiety, EBSA and other barriers to education
- Use practical, visual, creative and accessible approaches to language learning
- Incorporate learners’ interests and real-life contexts to make Spanish meaningful and engaging
- Develop learners’ confidence in communicating in another language
- Introduce learners to Spanish-speaking cultures and communities as part of a broad and inclusive learning experience
- Complete baseline assessments and identify strengths and areas for development
- Monitor progress and adapt teaching strategies appropriately
- Support learners with examination techniques and preparation for speaking, listening, reading and writing assessments
- Work appropriately with agreed access arrangements and individual support strategies
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, engagement, learning and progress
- Provide appropriate feedback to learners, families and professionals
- Contribute to Personal Learning Plans, reviews and quality-assurance processes
- Work collaboratively with learning mentors, tutors, SEND professionals and the wider education team
- Follow examination and awarding-body requirements where applicable
- Report safeguarding or welfare concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead
Requirements
- Experience teaching or tutoring Spanish to children or young people
- Strong spoken and written Spanish language skills
- Strong subject knowledge across the relevant Spanish/MFL curriculum
- A recognised teaching or tutoring qualification, relevant professional experience or appropriate language qualification
- Experience supporting learners with SEND or barriers to education is desirable
- Understanding of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, EBSA and inclusive teaching practices
- Ability to assess learners’ starting points and plan personalised learning
- Ability to make language learning accessible, practical and engaging
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- A calm, patient, creative and flexible approach
- Ability to motivate learners who may have experienced difficulties accessing traditional education
- Strong organisation, planning and record-keeping skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to safeguarding, confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Experience delivering GCSE Spanish is desirable
- Experience preparing learners for speaking, listening, reading and writing examinations is desirable
