Roles & Responsibilities

The role of a special education teacher in today’s schools is very critical in the proper education of

students with learning disability. This role would involve working with a certain number of disabled

students in a special education setting. Some of the responsibilities of the special educators including

but not limited to would be as follows:

• Initiate evaluations of students for disability as may be referred by counsellors, class teachers, co-

ordinators or parents.

• Interact with the student, counsellors, class teachers and parent if required to determine the specific

needs of such student.

• Work with counsellors, parents and testing specialists if required to develop individualized education

programs (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational and social development.

• Discuss the IEP of each student with the school CRD head and obtain approval before execution.
• Provide remedial classes as determined by the students’ individualized education programs (IEPs) by

employing techniques in an overall positive support system.

• Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, or one-on-one as per requirement,
• Provide direct and indirect instructional support to student in a positive environment.
• Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development

of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.

• Update IEPs throughout the academic year to reflect students’ progress and goals.
• Discuss the student’s progress with parents, class teachers, coordinators and CRD head.
