About Parenting the Spectrum
Parenting the Spectrum helps autism and special-needs families get support their school district often can't give them. We do two things: IEP advocacy, and one-on-one tutoring built around each child's IEP. Our founder, Merrie Weekley, taught exceptional student education in Florida public schools for eight years, then became an autism mom herself. We're a small team, and we keep growing because families keep coming. That's why we're hiring another tutor.
About the role
You'll teach reading, writing, and math one-on-one to autistic and special-needs students. Each lesson targets the specific skills in the child's IEP and uses the same ABA principles their therapy team already uses: clear prompts, errorless teaching, reinforcement, and visual structure.
We bring you the families. We train you on our curriculum. We handle invoicing through Florida's scholarship program with Step Up For Students. You teach.
What you'll do:
- Work one-on-one with students on the skill goals in their IEP
- Write short session notes that parents can see
- Flag patterns so we can coordinate with the child's ABA team or school
- Keep parents updated by email
Schedule and location:
- $30 an hour (increased to $35 after 1 month)
- Monday through Friday, between 9 am and 3 pm
- Part-time: about 10 to 15 hours a week to start, with more hours as we match you with more families
- In person only, with families across Santa Rosa and Escambia counties. This role is not virtual.
What you need:
- A bachelor's degree
- Availability Monday through Friday, between 9 am and 3 pm
- In-person sessions only (this role is not virtual)
- At least one year of teaching, tutoring, or therapy experience
- Comfort working with autistic and special-needs students
- Clear, warm writing when you communicate with parents
- Eligibility to work in the US as a 1099 independent contractor
Nice to have
- ESE or special education certification
- ABA experience (worked alongside a BCBA or carried out behavior plans)
- Training in a reading intervention such as Orton-Gillingham or Wilson
- A second language, especially Spanish
What you get:
- Families come to you. You don't market yourself or look for clients.
- Invoicing handled. Most of our families pay through Florida's Family Empowerment Scholarship (FES-UA). We do the invoicing, and we pay you.
- Support on every case. Merrie oversees every case, so you always have someone to ask.
- $30 an hour, steady daytime hours. Your hours grow as our family list does.
