What they need

Help keep safety, quality and environmental standards strong across a business that works all over Tasmania.

Degree C is looking for an SQE Advisor to join our team, supporting the systems, people and projects behind Tasmania’s leading multi-trade company.

Working alongside our SQE Manager, you’ll have a genuinely varied role. You might be on site conducting an inspection or supporting an investigation one day, and reviewing systems, analysing trends or advising managers the next.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys being out in the business, working directly with people and finding practical ways to strengthen safety, quality and environmental performance.

About Degree C

For more than 60 years, Degree C has delivered projects and services across Tasmania. Today, we employ more than 330 people across our Ulverstone, Launceston and Hobart operations.

Our teams work across a diverse range of trades, projects, service environments and customer sites, which makes SQE an important part of how we operate.

You’ll be joining an established SQE team with the opportunity to work across the broader business and contribute to the continual improvement of our integrated Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System.

About the role

Based at our Ulverstone Head Office and reporting to the SQE Manager, you’ll work with senior leaders, divisional and project managers, supervisors and employees across the business.

This isn't a role that's carried out entirely from behind a desk.

You'll spend time across our workplaces and project sites, building relationships with our teams, understanding how work is being carried out and helping ensure our systems and requirements translate into safe and practical ways of working.

You'll also play an important role in maintaining compliance, supporting our management systems and identifying opportunities to continually improve how we operate.

What your day might look like

The variety of our business means your days won't always look the same. You could be:

  • Visiting a project site to conduct an inspection and working with the team to address any identified actions.
  • Supporting an incident investigation, gathering information and helping determine practical corrective and preventative actions.
  • Meeting with a Project Manager to review SQE requirements for an upcoming project.
  • Reviewing incident or audit data to identify trends and areas requiring attention.
  • Preparing information or documentation for a third-party audit.
  • Providing advice to a manager or employee on an SQE matter.
  • Delivering internal training or supporting safety inductions for employees, subcontractors and consultants.
  • Reviewing part of our integrated management system and identifying opportunities to make a process clearer or more effective.
  • Working with managers and employees on rehabilitation and return-to-work matters.
  • Supporting the development of project management plans or submission documentation for major or higher-risk projects.

It’s a role that combines systems, compliance and reporting with plenty of interaction across the business and out on site.

What you'll be responsible for

Your role will include:

  • Supporting the ongoing development, maintenance and improvement of Degree C's integrated Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System.
  • Leading and supporting workplace incident and accident investigations, including liaison with regulatory authorities where required.
  • Conducting workplace and site inspections and audits.
  • Identifying improvement opportunities and supporting corrective and preventative actions.
  • Assisting with third-party audits and ongoing compliance with relevant legislation, standards and Degree C requirements.
  • Analysing incident, audit and other SQE data to identify trends and recommend preventative measures.
  • Providing practical SQE advice to senior leaders, managers, project teams and employees.
  • Supporting workers' compensation, rehabilitation and return-to-work processes.
  • Delivering internal training and supporting online safety inductions.
  • Helping ensure our management system is implemented consistently across the business.
  • Supporting SQE documentation for major and higher-risk projects.
  • Promoting environmental awareness and responsible work practices.
  • Contributing to continual improvement across our systems and operations.

About you

We’re looking for someone who understands that effective SQE is about more than policies, paperwork and compliance.

You'll be able to build relationships with people across the business, communicate requirements clearly and provide advice that is both technically sound and practical in a working environment.

You'll bring:

  • We welcome applications from experienced SQE professionals, as well as internal applicants with a strong trade or construction background who are keen to develop their career in Safety, Quality and Environment.
  • Experience in, or a demonstrated interest in developing, safety, quality and environmental management systems.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections and identifying practical improvements, or the ability to develop these skills.
  • The ability to assist with incident investigations and contribute to effective corrective and preventative actions.
  • A sound understanding of safe work practices and construction-site requirements, with a willingness to build knowledge of relevant legislation and management system standards.
  • Strong communication and coaching skills, with the ability to engage positively with workers, supervisors, project teams and senior management.
  • Good judgement, a practical approach to problem-solving, and the confidence to raise safety, quality or environmental concerns.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

Essential qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or willingness to obtain.
  • Current driver's licence.
  • Construction Industry White Card.

The following would also be highly regarded:

  • Diploma in Work Health and Safety.
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
  • Formal incident investigation training.
  • Integrated management system auditing qualifications or experience.

Why Degree C?

The breadth of Degree C means you'll have the opportunity to apply your SQE experience across a wide range of environments rather than focusing on a single workplace or type of operation.

You'll work alongside experienced managers, project teams and tradespeople across a business delivering projects and services throughout Tasmania.

You'll also have the support of an established SQE function and a role where your knowledge can contribute directly to how our systems work in practice.

Most importantly, we want someone who is prepared to get involved, ask questions and help us keep improving.

What we offer

Along with a competitive salary package, you'll receive:

  • Company vehicle.
  • Company phone or phone allowance.
  • Income protection – cover of up to $1,600 per week if an injury or illness prevents you from working, including when it isn't work-related.
  • Parental leave top-up – 100% of your regular base salary while receiving Government Paid Parental Leave, for up to 8 weeks for a birthing parent or 4 weeks for a non-birthing parent.
  • Work clothing and PPE – provided where required for the role and site visits.
  • Professional development – ongoing training and development to support your skills and knowledge.
  • Employee wellbeing support – including our Employee Assistance Program and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Long-term stability – permanent, full-time employment with an established Tasmanian business.
