Sr. Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

Backend architecture and engineering

• Design and implement backend services and RESTful APIs using Go, applying clean or hexagonal architecture where appropriate.
• Improve performance and scalability through PostgreSQL indexing and query tuning, Redis caching, and connection pooling.
• Design reliable communication between services using message brokers, retries, idempotency, and circuit breakers.
• Implement authentication, authorization, RBAC, encryption at rest and in transit, and audit trails.
• Design scalable and resilient reconciliation and settlement workflows that maintain data consistency.
• Build secure integrations with banks, switching networks, and other third-party providers, including handling timeouts, failures, and duplicate requests.

Quality and reliability

• Establish and maintain testing practices for your area, including unit, integration, and contract tests.
• Design and execute load tests to validate performance and capacity targets.
• Build observability through structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing.
• Define and monitor service-level indicators and objectives (SLIs/SLOs) for the services you own.
• Strengthen CI quality gates and automated checks to prevent regressions.

Ownership and technical leadership

• Own the stability of a service or technical area, troubleshoot production incidents, and drive improvements that prevent recurrence.
• Deliver large features across multiple sprints, managing technical dependencies and risks.
• Proactively identify and resolve technical debt.
• Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, provide constructive code reviews, and lead technical design reviews within your domain.
• Serve as a technical point of contact for your area.

Collaboration and communication

• Collaborate with Product, Security, and Infrastructure teams to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Clearly communicate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
• Document significant architectural decisions through ADRs or RFCs, particularly when they affect multiple teams.
• Facilitate productive technical discussions and help teams reach clear decisions.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience, with demonstrated ownership of production services or substantial features.
• Strong proficiency in Go and experience building and operating backend services.
• Strong PostgreSQL skills, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, and transactions.
• Experience with Redis or similar caching systems.
• Experience with message brokers such as Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed-system failure handling.
• Practical experience with automated testing, CI pipelines, and Git.
• Experience diagnosing production issues using logs, metrics, or traces.
• Understanding of backend security practices and data consistency.
• Ability to explain technical trade-offs, collaborate across teams, and mentor other engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in payments, financial services, reconciliation, or settlement.
• Experience integrating with banks, switching networks, or payment providers.
• Experience with AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.
