Job Title: Senior Business Data Analyst / Data Engineer Location: Remote (U.S.)

Duration: 3-Month Contract

About The Company We are a leading media and entertainment organization serving millions of customers through television and streaming products. Behind those experiences is a complex data ecosystem spanning customer behavior, subscription services, billing, financial transactions, offers, and operational systems.

Our Data & Analytics organization partners closely with business teams to turn that information into better customer experiences and smarter business decisions. This particular initiative supports Customer Retention Strategy , using data to develop richer customer profiles, better understand customer behavior, and ultimately inform the offers and experiences designed to retain customers.

Job Summary We are seeking a senior, hands-on Technical Business & Data Analyst to help solve complex customer and retention problems by connecting business requirements, business processes, and data . This is a senior Individual Contributor role that sits approximately 60% within Business/Data Analysis and 40% within Data Engineering . The emphasis, however, is not simply on executing against predefined requirements. This individual will work directly with business stakeholders to understand the problem they are trying to solve, uncover and refine requirements, investigate the underlying data, understand business logic and end-to-end workflows, and determine what the data is actually telling us before recommending a solution.

The ideal candidate is an exceptional SQL practitioner with strong business acumen and intellectual curiosity. We want someone who asks why , not simply what —someone who can identify missing requirements, challenge assumptions with data, connect information across systems and processes, and recognize downstream implications that may not be obvious in the initial request.

While this person needs enough engineering capability to work within a modern data environment, we would prioritize an exceptional Business/Data Analyst with advanced SQL and foundational Python over a highly technical Data Engineer who lacks business analysis, requirements discovery, and stakeholder-facing skills. Key Responsibilities

  • Partner directly with Customer Retention Strategy and other business stakeholders to understand business challenges, desired outcomes, customer use cases, and the questions the organization is ultimately trying to answer.
  • Lead requirements discovery and refinement, moving beyond what has been initially documented to identify missing requirements, inconsistencies, assumptions, dependencies, and additional business considerations.
  • Develop a deep understanding of end-to-end business processes and workflows to determine how individual requirements and proposed solutions fit within the broader customer and operational ecosystem.
  • Analyze large and complex datasets using advanced SQL to investigate customer behavior, retention opportunities, billing activity, financial information, and other business drivers.
  • Help develop customer profiles and analytical datasets that enable Retention Strategy teams to better understand customers and determine appropriate retention offers and experiences.
  • Use data to validate or challenge business assumptions, uncover patterns and anomalies, and provide additional context that may change how a problem or requirement should be approached.
  • Conduct root-cause and impact analysis across systems, datasets, business rules, and processes to identify why something is occurring—not simply what occurred.
  • Translate business problems and analytical findings into clear requirements and practical data solutions.
  • Constructively challenge stakeholder requirements when analysis, business logic, or underlying data suggests an alternative approach may better achieve the desired outcome.
  • Assess downstream impacts of proposed changes and identify dependencies across customer, billing, financial, operational, and analytical data environments.
  • Design and develop data transformations, datasets, tables, and supporting data pipelines within Databricks and/or Snowflake environments.
  • Use Python where appropriate to support data analysis, transformation, automation, and other technical requirements; advanced software engineering expertise is not required.
  • Apply data validation, reconciliation, and quality controls to ensure analytical outputs accurately represent underlying business processes and rules.
  • Partner with Data Engineers and other technical stakeholders when broader engineering, architecture, or platform expertise is required.
  • Clearly communicate findings, recommendations, risks, and tradeoffs to both business and technical audiences.
  • Independently own problems from initial discovery and requirements analysis through data investigation, solution development, validation, and delivery.

Requirements: Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline preferred.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in Business Analysis, Data Analysis, Technical Business Analysis, Analytics Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related data-focused discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with business stakeholders to discover, gather, challenge, and refine requirements rather than exclusively executing against predefined specifications.
  • Significant experience using SQL to investigate complex datasets, answer business questions, validate assumptions, reconcile discrepancies, and support solution development.
  • Experience understanding complex business processes and translating business logic into analytical or technical solutions.
  • Experience working within modern enterprise data environments such as Databricks and/or Snowflake.
  • Experience performing data analysis, root-cause analysis, impact analysis, and data validation across multiple systems or data sources.
  • Experience working with financial, billing, transactional, customer, or similarly complex enterprise datasets.
  • Experience within telecommunications, subscription services, streaming, media, or another recurring-revenue business is preferred but not required.

Skills:

  • Exceptional SQL expertise is critical, with the ability to independently query and analyze complex datasets, join information across multiple sources, investigate anomalies, validate business logic, and use data to answer questions that may not have an immediately obvious solution.
  • Strong business analysis and requirements discovery capabilities with the ability to move beyond documented requirements, ask insightful questions, identify what may be missing, and uncover the actual business need behind a request.
  • Strong business-process thinking with the ability to understand how data and individual requirements fit within an end-to-end workflow and anticipate upstream and downstream implications.
  • Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills with a natural curiosity for understanding why the data looks the way it does, what business process created it, and what it means in the broader business context.
  • Demonstrated ability to constructively challenge assumptions and requirements using data, logic, and business context while maintaining strong, consultative relationships with business stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of customer, billing, financial, or transactional data, including foundational knowledge of concepts such as billing activity and general ledger data.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks and/or Snowflake and the ability to work effectively within a modern cloud data environment.
  • Working knowledge of Python sufficient to support basic data analysis, transformations, and automation. Advanced Python development or software engineering expertise is not required.
  • Strong data engineering fundamentals with experience creating analytical datasets, transformations, data models, and/or pipelines to support business use cases.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate comfortably between business and technical audiences, explain analytical findings, and articulate why a particular solution or approach is recommended.
  • Strong independent problem-solving skills and the ability to take an ambiguous business problem, determine how to investigate it, identify the relevant data, and drive toward a practical solution with limited direction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with customer retention, churn, customer lifecycle, segmentation, personalization, or offer strategy data.
  • Experience within telecommunications, streaming, media and entertainment, subscription services, or another recurring-revenue business.
  • Familiarity with complex customer account, subscription, billing, and financial data environments.
  • Experience developing customer profiles or combining multiple sources of customer data to support segmentation, decision-making, or personalized offers.
  • Previous experience operating in a hybrid role spanning Business Analysis, Data Analysis, and Data Engineering rather than specializing exclusively in one discipline.
  • Experience supporting business stakeholders in a consultative capacity where discovery and problem-solving were as important as technical delivery.

Why Join Us This is a focused, high-impact opportunity to solve real business problems rather than simply work through a queue of predetermined development requirements. You'll partner directly with a Customer Retention Strategy organization that wants to better understand its customers, build richer customer profiles, and use data to inform more relevant retention offers and experiences.

For someone who enjoys digging into the data, understanding the business behind it, questioning assumptions, and figuring out what problem actually needs to be solved , this role provides an opportunity to combine advanced SQL, business analysis, data analysis, and hands-on technical execution within a complex enterprise environment.
