INTECH Process Automation is seeking a seasoned Sr. Instrument Engineer to join our Operations & Maintenance (O&M) team. The Sr. Instrument Engineer shall provide technical leadership and field engineering support for the maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, repair, installation, configuration, loop checking and functional testing of field instrumentation and associated Instrumentation, Control and Safety Systems (ICSS).
The position shall ensure the safe, reliable and technically compliant operation of field instruments, control and shutdown valves, wellhead control systems, Fire & Gas devices, instrument air systems and associated field interfaces within the assigned scope.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Lead and supervise preventive/corrective maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair and functional testing of field instrumentation, including process, analytical, vibration, metering and smart instruments.
- Review technical documentation such as Work Orders, P&IDs, loop/hook-up drawings, datasheets, hazardous-area requirements, maintenance history and applicable procedures before execution.
- Review and approve calibration, configuration, loop checking and functional testing, ensuring proper as-found/as-left records, traceability, tolerances and test results.
- Ensure complete loop integrity from field instruments through DCS, SIS, F&G, PLC, RTU/SCADA, HMI, historian and local indication systems.
- Provide technical support for smart instrumentation, including HART communication, configuration, diagnostics, measurement parameters and device health.
- Lead troubleshooting and RCA of complex and recurring instrumentation failures and recommend permanent corrective and reliability improvements.
- Oversee control and shutdown valve instrumentation, including positioners, I/P converters, solenoids, limit switches, regulators and partial-stroke testing, including stroke, feedback and response testing.
- Provide technical support for WHCP systems, including hydraulic/pneumatic/electrical controls, shutdown interfaces, valve feedback and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
- Lead F&G field-device maintenance and testing, including gas, flame, smoke and heat detectors, manual call points, alarms and associated interfaces; control safety-critical bypasses, inhibits and overrides.
- Support instrument air systems, including compressors where assigned, dryers, receivers, filters, regulators, drains and distribution systems, and investigate pressure, moisture and contamination issues.
- Ensure field installation integrity of hook-ups, impulse lines, tubing, manifolds, fittings, supports and weather protection, including correct materials, ratings and installation practices.
- Ensure hazardous-area and Ex compliance, including earthing, cable glands, ingress protection, weatherproofing and equipment integrity.
- Review maintenance documentation and records and ensure complete and technically accurate Work Order close-out, calibration and testing documentation.
- Ensure safety-critical instrumentation integrity, including approved proof/functional testing and proper clearance of bypasses, overrides, inhibits and forces before return to service.
- Control technical changes through COMPANY approval/MOC, particularly changes affecting safety functions, Cause & Effect, shutdown philosophy, voting, setpoints or control configurations.
- Develop maintenance and reliability strategies, optimize PM routines, identify recurring/bad-actor failures and recommend engineering improvements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to Instrument Engineers, Technicians and maintenance personnel.
Requirements:
To Be Successful in This Role, You Must Have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation, Control, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in instrumentation and control within the oil & gas, petrochemical or process industry, including at least 5 years in a senior/lead role.
- Strong experience in field instrumentation maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, loop checking, commissioning and functional testing.
- Proficiency in DCS, SIS, F&G, PLC, RTU/SCADA and ICSS systems, including field-to-system loop interfaces.
- Practical experience with control/shutdown valves, actuators, positioners, solenoids, pneumatic/hydraulic systems and Wellhead Control Panels.
- Strong knowledge of Fire & Gas systems, safety instrumented functions, proof testing and safety-critical instrumentation.
- Knowledge of IEC 60079, hazardous-area requirements, Ex equipment/integrity and applicable IEC/ISA/API/NFPA standards.
- Competence in calibration/metrology, smart/HART instrumentation, instrument air systems, hook-ups, tubing and impulse lines.
- Proven capability in troubleshooting, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), maintenance strategy, PM optimization and reliability improvement.
- Ability to manage MOC, technical documentation, Work Orders and safety-critical changes.
- Strong technical leadership, communication, contractor/OEM coordination and mentoring skills.
- Professional certifications in functional safety, hazardous areas, instrumentation or calibration/metrology are advantageous.
