Partner with site EHS, Operations, Engineering, Facilities, Legal, Corporate Environmental, and segment leadership to embed environmental compliance into operational planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement.

Site leadership remains accountable for day-to-day operational compliance; this role provides segment-level strategy, technical oversight, governance, management system development, policy adaptation, verification, and escalation to enable consistent performance across the assigned sites.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Strategy and Risk Reduction

  • Develop and execute a multi-year environmental compliance strategy and annual priorities aligned with business operations, regulatory exposure, and significant environmental risks.
  • Assess the environmental risk profile across sites; prioritize resources and initiatives based on potential regulatory, operational, and environmental consequences.
  • Integrate environmental requirements into business planning and management of change for new equipment, processes, chemicals, capacity expansions, and facility modifications.
  • Develop and deploy environmental management systems and governance.
  • Identify emerging regulatory requirements and translate them into practical implementation plans, standards, and site actions.

Regulatory Compliance and Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership on environmental permitting/licensing, including applicability, inventories, calculations, permit applications/renewals/modifications, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting.
  • Oversee compliance programs for hazardous and non-hazardous waste, including characterization, generator status, storage, labeling, transportation, disposal, manifests, and vendor oversight.
  • Provide technical oversight for wastewater/stormwater/drinking water permits, sampling, discharge limits, treatment performance, inspections, reporting, and unauthorized discharge investigations.
  • Guide site programs for spill prevention and response, chemical management, storage tanks, environmental releases, and emergency response.
  • Ensure a process exists to periodically reconcile permits, registrations, and authorizations with actual equipment, materials, processes, emissions, discharges, production volumes, and operating conditions.
  • Provide oversight and technical guidance on required government mandated reports as required by law.

Other Key Responsibilities

Assurance and Incident Management

  • Lead a risk-based environmental compliance assurance approach incorporating legal compliance audits, site reviews, self-assessments, critical-obligation verification, and follow-up on significant findings.
  • Provide oversight of environmental incidents, releases, permit deviations, exceedances, and Notices of Violation; support timely notification, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and prevention of recurrence.
  • Validate the completeness and accuracy of significant environmental data, calculations, regulatory submissions, and supporting records.
  • Track high-risk and overdue corrective actions, verify effectiveness of significant controls, and escalate material compliance risks to appropriate leadership.
  • Create a site recovery program for at-risk/high risk locations.

Systems, Standardization and Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and sustain common environmental compliance tools, procedures, permit registers, obligation matrices, compliance calendars, dashboards, and technical guidance.
  • Use Benchmark Gensuite and other approved digital tools to improve compliance visibility, action tracking, reporting quality, and consistency across sites.
  • Apply data analytics and appropriately governed AI-enabled solutions to identify trends, simplify administrative work, and support earlier risk identification.
  • Analyze findings, incidents, regulatory events, and site performance to identify systemic issues and deploy scalable preventive improvements and best practices.
  • Coordinate technical performance of consultants, laboratories, waste vendors, and other environmental service providers.

Leadership, Governance and Performance

  • Partner with Corporate Environmental, legal, site and business leaders to clarify environmental responsibilities, build capability, and integrate compliance into routine operating reviews.
  • Establish and monitor meaningful indicators covering critical obligations, permit deviations, audit findings, corrective-action timeliness and effectiveness, and significant environmental events.
  • Provide clear, risk-based updates and recommendations to segment EHS and business leadership, including progress against strategic priorities.
  • Coach and influence cross-functional teams without relying on direct reporting authority; share lessons learned and effective practices across sites.
  • Assist in developing training programs to enhance capability and compliance in IS BU sites.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or related technical discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of eight years of progressive environmental compliance experience, preferably in manufacturing or industrial operations, including multi-site responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated expertise across multiple environmental regulatory programs, particularly air emissions and permitting, waste, wastewater/stormwater, chemical management, spill prevention, and regulatory reporting.
  • Ability to independently interpret regulations and permit conditions, assess applicability, identify compliance gaps, and implement practical, risk-based solutions.
  • Experience developing compliance strategies, leading cross-functional initiatives, conducting assurance activities, and influencing site and business leadership.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001, environmental management systems, digital compliance platforms, data analytics, and practical AI applications.
  • Strong analytical, communication, project-management, and stakeholder-management skills; able to set priorities and execute with limited supervision.
  • Professional certifications such as CHMM, PE, QEP, REM, or local equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to travel to assigned manufacturing sites as business needs require.
